[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Stash guns (Page 1 of 2)

| Anyone else ever consider buying 3-4 Hi Points or similarly cheap guns to stash around the house? Currently have a few Glocks and 1911's in various locations, but it makes my safe look so empty having those guns spread around. Plus, if you were involved in a home defense shooting, I'd rather turn over a High Point than one of my "good guns" for ballistics/investigative purposes. Thoughts? |

Why not just carry one good gun on you when you're home? The cops taking one of your guns for evidence after a SD shooting will probably be pretty low on the worry list at that point. +1 And it doesn't matter to anyone but you how empty your safe looks. |
|
Do you think I should buy a couple of old Yugos to drive around town in?
Reason I ask is my garage looks silly without the good cars in it.
It's a tool. Use the best tool for the job. Period. Use a tool you are most familiar with and that you have absolute confidence in working properly. Besides, not having all of your stuff in one safe is actually a smart move. You might wind up with something left in the event of a fire or theft. |
| I ususally am armed 100% of the time. While I wouldn't buy cheap guns just to stash, I do buy lots of mags when they are cheap and keep them loaded in different parts of the house and truck, just in case. I wouldn't mind gettine a cheap used shotty or sks to keep in the truck but that's about it. |
| Wow...didn't realize so many people would feel so strongly about this. Currently, I don't stash guns and almost always carry or have my primary nearby when at home, I don't think an intruder is going to have a preference at to whether he gets shot with a Kimber, a High Point or a nail gun and no one carried 100% of the time. |

" a few Glocks and 1911's in various locations" ????? "If it works", for the money you'll spend in ammo to test reliability you could buy another Glock, ...... almost , but if the glock or 1911 saves your life, it's served its purpose and is paid for in full. If you are in a life or death shoot out, do you really want a Hi Point in your hand when you have a Glock in your safe? Put the Hi Points in the safe. |

Two Glocks upstairs (+ an LCP), one downstairs, in various states of rediness. HD guns dont go in the safe. If I had no kids and unlimited money I would have one in every room / vehcle. I'd rather not carry on my person in the house, I'm sick of it by quitting time.
ETA: my oldest one can't rack a slide yet, but I will have to adjust things when she can. |

If I ever came home to find a gun being pointed at me, I'd feel pretty silly if it was one of my own. You can't avoid a burglar bringing his own. But I keep mine in a locked safe while I'm out of the house. |

A friend has 4 S&W model 10 police turn-ins hidden in his house. Each has a pair of speed loaders as well. This, maybe even a Charter Arms snubbie, or $300 will buy you a Ruger P85/89. Yeah, it's a brick with a trigger, but it's also 15 rounds that won't jam. |
|
I would have to side with the revolver people.
Speedoaders are cheap, and revolvers can be left loaded with out worry about springs, and anyone regardless of age or strength can shoot them. You have to be inventive where you hide anything, that way anyone bumbling around in drawers, etc won't find it How much porn has been hidden that will never be found |
| I keep a 1911 in my coffee table downstairs, a M&P on the nightstand, and a AR in the master bedroom closet ready to go. I have a dog and a great alarm system and live in a nice neighborhood. Recently though, the criminals have gotten into breaking in the well to do neighborhoods because thats more likely to yield high dollar valuables rather than breaking in homes in bad neighborhoods. Criminals usually operate with three or more scum bags during home invasions so I do feel the need to have a weapon easily available downstairs and upstairs. A hi-point though, no, I would never trust my family's lives to a high point. We have no children yet btw. |
|
Nope. I carry from the time I wake up until the time I go to bed.
When I do go to bed, the carry gun comes out of the holster and is laid on the nightstand within arms reach. No need for me to practice drawing from hidden spots under the table, or in drawers. I just draw, unsafe, bang switch. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
| If I shoot an intruder with my HK and the cops take it and don't give it back, so be it. I'll happily drive my still alive self down to the gun shop and spend $750 on another one. Beats having that same intruder shove a jammed or broken Hi-Point up my ass instead. |
|
A cheap gun is a cheap gun. Dont bet your life on it.
Most of my guns are locked up in my 1st floor bedroom or garage (with exception of my carry pieces) but II do keep a extra gun locked up on the second floor of my home. If someone tried to break in at the right time I could be boxed in easily. |

Plus, if you were involved in a home defense shooting, I'd rather turn over a High Point than one of my "good guns" for ballistics/investigative purposes. Thoughts? That's one of the main reasons behind the 2 is one, one is none principal. Always have a back up of your primary and if you are really concerned, have a back up for your back. Quoted:
Why not just carry one good gun on you when you're home? That is the right answer right there and the only way to make sure you always have a gun when you need one. Gun lying around the house just give bad guys one more way to get their scummy hands on one. |

I have 5 glock 17s hidden all around the house and one in the bug out bag, including one under my shirt right now. There are also a couple of G19s around here somewhere...
The safe is well stocked with 4 berettas, an M&P9, and my ranch gun - G21SF. I think that a glock is "cheap" enough and I would have no problem trusting my life with one, and then I trust it to sit in an evidence locker for a month or two without rusting. |
| For personal defense at home I prefer a firearm I trust to be 100% reliable and I prefer it strapped to my hip when I'm awake or less than 3 feet away on the bed stand when I'm asleep. I definitely don't like the idea of leaving loaded guns unsecured, outside of a safe, laying around the house as a gift for anyone who breaks in. Don't give your enemies the gift of fire. |
