Finally took it out yesterday with 100rds. of S&B 124 ball. 4 light strikes, and it locked up hard on a partially chambered round at about 70 or so rounds through, could'nt rack the slide to clear it, it was jammed that hard. I had to press the muzzle end of the slide against a tree to get it free up!

I decided to go out today and try her again, I figured it may need a few more rounds to break in. Ammo was S&B, WW white box, Remington 115 JHP. No light strikes today but it locked up hard again on a partially chambered Rem. JHP at around 100 rds. through.  Same drill as above to clear it. I believe the loaded cartrige indicator is the cause of the lock up's. I removed it today and I'll try it again next weekend.

The best thing I can say about the S9 so far is it can use Browning High Power mags for range use as long as they have a relief cut in the back for slide clearance. They fit a little loose but do lock in and function in my S9. I have some 13rnd. Browning H.P. PRO MAGS and some old 20rnd. stainless. no name that ran without a problem and locked the slide back on last round they were cut in the back where the slide picks up the round.I suppose a person could cut a clearance notch in the rear of a Mec Gar or FN High Power mags for the Steyr's slide to clear if needed as they would still function fine in the H.P. I believe alot of the cheaper no name H.P.mags have the cut in the back

When the Steyr locked up today I was using factory 10 rnd. S9 mags from CDNN. So it was'nt caused by using the H.P mags.

Why not get mags for the 40, tweek the feed lips just a touch and use them. You'll get added rounds over the 9mm mags and they'll still be Steyr mags. I think this little "trick" will work with other 9mm pistols that have a 40S&W counter part. Seems like an easy way to get hi-caps for your 9mm without having to spend a bunch of money.

I've got quite a few H.P's and H.P clones along with  plenty of magazines for them. Some of the after market mags function fine in the Steyr because there not a true copy of a FN magazine. I'm not going to notch a original FN mag for the Steyr thats for sure. I just like the idea of having some mags that function in both pistols.

I'm not sure it's legal to mod a 40 cal mag to 9mm as it would have to function in the 40 handgun also.

Sure it is, so long as the 40 mag will still feed 40's and work in the original gun. Just don't modify the feed lips too much and you'll be ok. There's not all that much difference between the 9mm and the 40. In some guns you just load 9mm into the 40 mag, stick it in your 9mm pistol and you're ready to rock. Other mags will need just a touch of tweeking, but it will still work in the original pistol and will feed 9's as well.

the loaded chamber indicator seemed to be the cause of the ocasional lock ups. I removed the rod and trimmed the nose so it's flush with the breech face. 250 rds. of white box and no problems. The 20 rd. High Power mags ran fine in the S9 also.
