How many of you guys have had success with this style of 1911? I ask because I'm thinking of getting one.

i used to have a colt defender and i loved it.  very accurate.  the only reason i sold it was that i wanted a steel framed 1911 sub compact.

The Colt Defender seems to be the best and I have never had a problem with mine. Some of the "Usual Suspects" will rant and rave against anything shorter than 4.25" but I just ignore them.

Many of the problems with small 1911s are avoided by not trying to make them 100% 1911.  The spring systems have helped a great deal.

How compact are we talking?  In the rest of the world, the Commander would be service size, the Officer compact, and the Defender/PDA/EMP subcompact.  Since we have the Government model, does that make my Officer size subcompact?  I use a Para Ordnance Companion (LDA) for primary carry.  It has never hiccupped in feeding, firing, or ejecting in the four years I've had it, with any ammo other than Speer Short Barrel.  That ammo hangs up in every gun I have other than my XD.

I had a strange issue when I first got the gun, loading and chambering the first round, then dropping the mag to top off, a second round would be pulled out of the magazine when it came from the pistol.  It took a couple hundred rounds, but that problem has gone away.  In any case, it was not a reliability or safety issue.

Have had no issues with my Officer's length 1911. (3.5" barrel)

AS I understand it from hanging around M1911 forums:

5" barrel = Gov't
4.25" barrel = Commander
3.5" barrel = Officer's
3" barrel = Subcompact

You shouldn't hang around places like that.

I had a Springfield ultra compact and it blew... it would only shoot Fiocchi and it only shot that about half the time without hang-up. Since then I have picked up a Kimber ultra carry II and this one seems to be really nice pistol. I think the Sub-compact 1911 tends to be a bit more finicky then the other sizes.

I had a Colt Defender that never missed a shot. I now have a Springfield loaded Micro that is still being broken in. I've not had any major issues so far. I've only out 200 rounds through it. Trigger sucked from SA. 6.8 lbs. I'm having the trigger reworked and getting rid of the ILS.

I have one of the original Kimber Aegis II w/3" barrel, and last year I bought an SIS Ultra.  Both were purchased new.  Both function 100% and do so right out of the box.

Colt Defender here and I love it.  It is my first  1911 style handgun.  I was nervous about buying it at first, but after shooting the first magazine I knew I had made a good decision getting it.  There are people out there that have nothing but bad things to say about "compact" 1911's.  Many of those people have never even handled a compact and are just basing their opinions off of something they read somewhere or they think ALL compacts are bad because they had a bad experience with one particular model from one particular manufacturer.  Those people and opinions exist pretty much on any type of gun though it seems.  After trying mine at the range, my dad just went and got him one as he liked it so much.  I wasn't a big fan of 1911's before this gun, but it has me wanting a second one!

I have a Colt New Agent. It's been a great pistol.

About 700 rds of assorted fmj and jhp ammo thru it without a problem.

Very accurate. Feels good in hand.

I have the Colt Defender and love it. I bought it 10 years ago when it came out and would not trade it for anything. I put 1000's of rds in it and still like a top!  I do have a Colt New Agent, still new in the box, and now I am looking for the Colt Night Defender.

I work a a gun shop here in OKLA and got to put my hand on a New 3" Kimber gun and it was nice, but I could not hit anything with it. I try open sights, and with the laser and had no luck. I then  got my Colt out and shot with it, and it was dead on.   I will stay with Colts!!!

Very nice!  I had only heard rumors about there being a Night Defender and was beginning to think they were just a  myth until I finally saw one this past weekend.  It looked good and for having night sites, it didn't cost that much more than the regular Defender.
