There was a thread a couple of days ago that had a link for a surplus site that sold stainless S&W revolvers for around $250.

Anyone know what site it was?

They were .38s or .357s in pretty rough shape, but functional.

My plan is to get one to keep hidden in a lock box in my truck. Finish isn't an issue.

Anyone know where I might find surplus model 10's?  Looking for blued, 4inch bull barrel, square butt wood grips or newer rubberized?  Its what my department issues (NYSDOCS) and I've seen them on J&G once but they've been off the site for a while.  We are slowly transitioning to glock 17's

You can try the link I put in my previous post in this thread. They have 1 for $270.

so how hard would it be to replace those hammers back to a full hammer?

Here are a couple of three inch 65-3 .357 magnums I bought off the sight I posted. I have cleaned them up a littIe. I ordered Monday night and received yesterday morning from my FFL. They costa  little more than the .38 special 4 inch guns and they had hammers.

It's really easy. pull the side plate off remove the main spring and DAO hammer and drop the new part in.

I really didn't have time to go to the range yet, but did shoot 6 rounds of .38 special  out of each. In trying to find a gunsmith to beadblast the finish I went to two. Both checked timing and lockup. They said they were good. I left them off to be bead blasted and should get them back in a few weeks.

Nice, now put some clean wood on 'em.

What was entailed in the bead blasting? Just disassemble and blast?

3" is a nice length on the K frame especially if you want do some CCW. Wonder what it'd cost to have a 4" cut back? I'd put a different front sight on if I were going to that much work. Some form of hi-viz sight probably.

Nice beading job.

Anyone that's interested,

Allan's Armory has listed more 3" 65's. I missed the boat on the first batch but currently have a nice wood gripped example inbound.

They will get crimson trace laser grips when I get the money.

I took them to a gunsmith for the bead blast. He took them apart, blasted and reassembled. It cost $100 for the pair.

Nice! I wonder if any local shops would do that for me?

Got my "G to VG Model 64 square butt" ($189) transferred from J&G today. I will put up pictures later.

Initial impressions:

This piece was beat, if it was blued it would be rough. There are some very serious gouges on the frame, like the owner drug the holstered pistol across brick or concrete walls.
All screws have been boogered
Some fore/after cylinder play
Some right/left play.
No flash cutting
bore is a mirror

The hand and cylinder are worn such that I bet the previous user did the "spin the cylinder and slam it shut" thing like in the movies.

All-in-all I am OK so far for $211 shipped. This is my first revolver. I would say, however, that "Fair to good" hits closer to the mark than "Good to Very Good" on these guns.

ETA: There some rust inside the trigger guard.

More disturbing, if I shine a light at the rear of the cylinder and dry fire it, the cylinder does not seem to line up with the bore. I assume this is not normal?

My first course of action would be to put a proper hammer on that thing and worry about the finish later

That is eventually the plan. I am not worried about the external finish although it will be dealt with at some point.

My biggest concern right now is determining if it is out of time. I do not know much about revolvers, but I can tell looking down the muzzle that three of the cylinders are slightly out of line with the bore at full lock. Would an oversized hand help to fix that?

Its pretty easy actually,  pull it all apart and go for it on the external finish.  Turns out pretty nice

While not the Smoke Wagon  in question  it is a stainless smith...
