After months of reading up on this pistol I finally got to handle one at my local gun dealer today. They had one in the case, stainless model. It was a very good looking piece, and felt good to handle, but when I racked the slide, it didn't feel nearly as smooth slide to frame fit wise as my old Springer 1911-A1.
Price tag had $699 on it.

700 dollars?  Seriously!?

It was a pretty good deal back when they were $399, but if they're charging as much or even more for them than a 1911 from one of the more reputable companies, what's the point?

700 dollars isn't that far away from a kimber...don't settle for a taurus.

Oh no! I wasn't interested in buying it, but I was glad to at least handle one to see for myself, and as far as this shops price / stainless - $699, blued - $599.
I knew they were increasing in price, but I don't know current average.

from what i've seen, those are about the current averages...a tad steeper, but they are no longer the $500 OTD for the blued ones

imo, unless its for 5 bills, you are better off w/ an SA, colt, kimber, etc

I'll have to spend a bit more for my next one. A basic SA/TRP is the bottom feeder of my short list. In my rural neck of the woods I have to go strictly by what I read & see cause nobody around here would dream of dropping 2k +/- on a .45 except me, so no shops keep high ends on hand.

they used to be at a great price and i was gonna snag one up, but for the price that the op stated, i would go with a much better sa 1911.

$700!!! You gotta be f$#@%@* kidding me! I bought a used Kimber for $550 and a brand new one for $630...
What a rip off. Taurus is going to screw themselves on this one....

There is a stainless model on Gun Broker for a buy it now price of 595.00. I bought a WWII Stainless Springer for 550. several years ago. Considering it came with GI sights and didn't even come with an extra magazine I think Taurus has some value.

I shot one at a local range, nice for the money.

I bought my blued Taurus last March for $479.00. One month later they were $569 at the same store.  I have enjoyed it.  It shoots great and is very accurate.  I also have an SA Champion.  For the price I paid it is a great gun.  I don't think I would have paid much more than that for it though.

It ain't Taurus.  It's unscrupulous dealers taking advantage of all good publicity and feedback the PT1911 has generated.  Dealer price on the PT 1911 SS is a fair amount below $600.00.

I'm not so sure it's only the dealers. The dealers where I live were never able to get more than one or two at a time back when the prices were in the $450-500 range, the price at which a PT 1911 is still a good value. If more had been available, the dealers couldn't jack up the price so much. Kind of a shame that Taurus can't/hasn't kept up with the demand, because at $600+ there are many more options.

It's supply and demand, like anything else. If they are overpriced, you will see their prices drop.

Just because it's overpriced doesn't mean people won't buy it.

Many are convinced that you're getting $2k worth of "custom" features for a fraction of the cost. For those that really believe it, they are sure that they are not overpriced (of course this doesn't change the fact that they are indeed overpriced)
