| Anybody got one? What ya think? |

Taurus is downright negligent for the magazine ads they use for the Judge. It suggests that a .410 shotshell is a good choice for self defense. Someone is going to get hurt because they thought they could use that to defend themselves. I hope Taurus gets sued for it. It's downright negligent.
Otherwise, I have no idea what the draw of the Judge is. |
|
If you want to use it for home defense/personal protection, buy a .357 revolver.
If you're looking for a "fun" gun that's different, or perhaps have lots of snakes on your property, then look at the Judge. It's a gimmick, so if you buy it, know that it's not the best money you could've spent on a defensive firearm. |

Go read the Box-O-Truth article on the Judge. Then read the one on using shotshells in a .38 or .44 caliber revolver. The Box O' Truth #41 - The Taurus Judge Vs. The Box O' Truth |

The Box O' Truth Be sure to read the BOT article on revolver snake loads. Compare the target pics and the .44 shotshell loads look much more effective than .410 shells fired out of the Judge. I saw another article somewhere that chronographed .410 shells out of the Judge and the velocity was very low. Must have been a magazine article, as I can't find it online. The Speer manual says .44 shotshell loads are about 1200 fps. I was intrigued with the Judge and had one on layaway until I saw the BOT write up. I found a real "Snake Charmer" yesterday at the gunshow. $135 later I have an original H Koon Mfg, made in Dallas, TX .410 Snake Charmer. Looks like this .... minus the safety on the side.

The velocity of shot coming out of a Judge is exceeded by most pellet rifles! And air rifle pellets have a better shape and weight than a shotgun pellet. The 00 round ball performance is greatly exceed by a .36 Cap & Ball using black powder! Not exactly known as a manstopper… .45 ACP exceeds any 45 LC from a Judge… No matter how you slice it, the Judge's appeal is only to the uninformed. |

Do you infact own a Judge, and to your own tests? or did you read some cool stats on the "Internets" and just pass on more crappy advice |

This has nothing to do with whatever other guns you own. So I'm gonna leave that out. If there's nothing to get over, then stop getting up in arms about it when people give their opinions. Secondly, it's a FACT that .410 slugs and 00 buck are ballistically inferior to most small arms calibers. Tell me one thing the Judge does better to any measurable degree than a .44 wheelgun with shotshells short of shooting quail. THAT is a goofy product. It was surely invented by Taurus' Marketing Department. |
| OK, I give up you're right the Judge is not a real handgun I'll get rid of mine ASAP.Due to the overwhelming amount of "facts" presented in this thread on how underpowered this really is what would the "experts" suggest to replace it? How about a nice lorcin .380 maybe? |
|
The .380 has better penetration characteristics and has more "defensive" loadings manufactured for it. It was in fact designed with shooting people in mind, while the .410 was designed with birds and small game in mind.
The Judge is a real handgun. The .45 Colt round is nothing to be sneezed at, but that is the only feature it has that I find relavent to a self defense revolver. You could certainly give it better balance with a standard .45 Colt cylinder. It is indeed a gimick, but an effectivly marketed one. If I had to wade through a snake den and needed to get of several shots of snake loads quickly it would be o.k. .410s are great for small game that you don't want to tear up real bad. Not a quality I want if I'm shooting at someone trying to kill me. I'd rather have a S&W 29 in .44 Mag, or a Taurus Raging Bull in the same caliber or even .357. |

I've been shooting for a little over 50 years now, and what Old Painless writes, I hold in high regard; you might learn a thing or two from reading the Box O' truth as well. OP isn't only "a guy"; he's a guy with an impressive amount of practical knowledge and knows what he's talking about, yet you dismiss him as some sort of a yokel. Since this is a technical forum; I'll leave it at that. |

I did'nt dismiss him as some kind of "yokel" I stated that it does'nt really seem to be a controlled "test" if you "cut down" shells to fit. I don't doubt the man has a lifetime of knowledge and i value that in anyone. What I said is that NOBODY has presented any real data in this thread,I mean really I've been told that a pellet gun is faster and has a better bullit shape. No panties in a twist here, but i do notice a common theme to this site is if someone has a post count under 5000 or so they are just some "kid" or "don't know shit" and are fair game to stomp a mud hole in there ass just for posting. I can't change anyones mind and neither can you. BTW I'll bight on this "Since this is a technical forum;I'll leave it at that" Fire away would'nt want to deprive you of a chance to kick the shit out of a "newbie" |
