I'm looking to get my first plastic handgun and have narrowed it down to the Taurus PT 24/7 and a Springfield XD, both with 5" barrels.

I'll be mostly plinking with this gun since 9mm is much cheaper than 45acp. It will also be used to introduce new shooters who might think my 1911's and 44 magnums are to much gun.

So? Which gun do you all like? Give me the pro's & con's of each......Any others you might recommend????

H&K will be the BEST 9mm polymer you can buy, but they're about $100-200 more than most other brands, generally speaking. If $$$ isn't an issue & accuracy IS an issue, then H&K is the way to go.

Given your choice between the XD & 24/7, I quickly vote for the XD. Something about the 24/7 grip I dislike, too mushy perhaps?

Now, I will say this about Taurus: they have perhaps THE best customer service in the gun mfgr world on their guns. I have repeatedly seen boobs blow their Taurus' up with faulty reloads & Taurus rebuilds them & sends them back @ N/C. Not too many mfgrs would do that, IMO.

Obviously the BEST thing to do is to shoot both guns, if you can. What feels good in the gun shop may be a completely different ball of wax when the trigger is pulled.

Also, based on what I've seen out there, the aftermarket options for the XD is about 10 to 1 over the 24/7, if that's a concern to you?

The 24/7 is a awsome gun. It will digest just about anything. I have never owned one but have shot one alot. A buddy of mine has had one for about a year. He has put about 3000 rounds through it. They are accurate, cheap, and function wonderfully. He really didn't care for the grip either so he put a hogue slipover grip on it and it approve the grip feel.

XD. I can't speak for the 9mm, but my XD40 is top notch.

I have the sub compact XD and love it. I even cosidered buying a 5" compensated version as a fun shooter and a shtf hand out gun.

Hey guys thanks for the posts.

I was back at the gun store yesterday fondling both of them. They were out of the 5" models so I was checking out the smaller barrelled versions. The XD did remind me alot of my 45's and yes the 24/7 was a wee bit soft in the hands. The Taurus's there were under $400 though.....Will be keeping on eye out for the 5" models....

I cant speak for the Millennium Pro series, but I had a Taurus Millenium.

That gun was the biggest POS I have ever owned. It would always fail to feed a round in the middle of a shooting session and just plain sucked.

I myself sold it for $200 and bought a XD, then another.

Taurus may have a lifetime warranty, but I just cannot findmyself buying another.

Maybe a revolver, but not a semi auto

As a multiple Taurus handgun owner, I can tell you very honestly the XD has a much better trigger.

In my hands, the Taurus wins on most other points, but for some the unique (read: awful to most people) trigger is a deal breaker.

The trigger has an obscene amount of takeup.  More than 90% of the travel is so light its not even measured in pounds.  The actual trigger break is reported to be around 5 lbs, but I have no way to verify this number.  It is a very light pull.  Its actually really good for slow fire plinking, but its not an ideal combat trigger by any means.

So I don't know if I recommend it to you or not, given your use for the firearm.

The "unique" Taurus trigger may work well for you, since you are clearly not buying the gun for SD use.

I concur, I've shot both and they both are very nice guns.

I own the M&P9 and love it.  I will find friends for it!

the only taurus I own is a revolver so I can't vouch for them

You really can't go wrong with either a 24/7 Pro or an XD. They are my two favorite polymer pistols. The XD does have better aftermarket support and that may be a factor if you need a holster.

I USED to think so as well, but they are not as tough as I thought.  I have owned 5 HK's and they were all great but they just don't fit my hand.  We have a 9mm USPf in the rental case and it is always broken, so was the USPf .45 we had until we finally junked it.  The received about the same amount of range time and care as the XD's/Glocks and M&P's.  The latter three have been flawless.  Also, take a look at Big Bore's durability test of the Glock G21.  He tries some of the same tests with a HK and it tanks big time.

Now, as for the Taurus vs XD the Springfield is hands down the better gun.  Taurus customer service is good but SA's is equal or better.

I am going to have to very much disagree with this statement.

If you are looking for a low priced polymer 9mm I would look for a used glock or a polymer framed baby eagle or EAA witness.

Only way you will know what's right for you is to shoot them both. Rent, borrow, whatever it takes.

My everyday carry (when clothing does not preclude it) is a full size XD-9. I have no experience with the 24/7, but I do have a Millenium Pro in .45 and absolutely love it. I'll probably look at transitioning to it for carry (eleven rounds of .45 ACP small enough to fit in your pocket, so what's not to like?), but still have not fired enough rounds through it to deem it "reliable enough". And it is harder to control in rapid fire than the XD-9, as the XD is a pussycat by comparison. That quick target aquisition during rapid firing is a big reason why I like the XD. It also passed the "reliable enough" test with flying colors. Never had an issue with probably seven or eight different rounds and six to seven hundred of them total.

Your disagreement doesn't mean it's not true...............

But the HK is not the best.....................  They are good guns but they have nothing on the Glock, XD and S&W M&P.  I want to like them but they have a high bore axis, tall/blocky/uncomfortable frame and slide, expensive magazines and replacement parts and are more fragile than the competition.  This is my experience with them, YMMV.
