Who makes good quality double stack 1911s?

Are they reliable?

Does anyone use them for concealed carry?

I believe STI makes one as well as Para and Springfield.. I have two Springfield PX9707L's which Springfield stopped making around 04 (I believe). They are 13+1 from the factory and are the older version of the "Loaded" model. Mine both run like tops and I carry them occaisionally but they are very heavy. The one did have trouble feeding hollow points but a trip back to Springfield by the guy that I sold it to corrected that (I ended up buying it back from him last week).

Rock Island Armory also made (still makes?) a double stack (1911A2).  I just bought one recently that had been at my local pro shop for years, and haven't worked the bugs out of it yet.  I also have a ParaOrdnance Big Hawg double stack with aluminum frame.  It works pretty well.  I'd never carry either for a CCW, but they're fun to shoot.

Now is this because of weight?  Or do you feel that its not reliable enough to trust your life to?

There are two main designs: Para and STI/SVI.   Springfield, RIA, and others have cloned the Para design.  The Para guns suffer from poorly made mags and spotty QC.  The S_I design is more reliable and practical, being light enough to actually use.

I would trust my life to mine but they are incredibly heavy. My fully loaded M&P 9mm with an X300 weighs less than my UNLOADED 1911.

Kimber Wilson and charles daily used the bul licensed design do not know if Bul is a copy of para or sti.

then caspain iirc is only used by caspain.

STI SVI is about you best option.

I carry a Para 13/45 concealed. Now the gun was accurate out of the box but did not like the factory 10 round mag. I bought after market hi cap mags and factory hi cap mags. The gun function well with the hi caps, it just does not like the ten rounders.

It seems to like all the hp rounds equally. The only thing I did tot he gun was add Novak's drop in rear sight. The gun is a little heavy because of all steel construction but you get use to it.

It fits my Milt sparks iwb holster and is easy to draw.

Of course in Tx concealed carry is tougher in summer due to heat and what you have to wear, so I use a fanny pack during the heat.

I am OK with heavy as long as they are reliable.

I used a Para P12-45 as my EDC for a few years.  Loved it, very accurate for a Officers ACP-sized gun.  Started getting finicky after ~4000-5000 rounds; occasional malfunction.  Then, when I moved and had to re-take a CCW class, I got 6 jams out of 100 rounds fired with my carry ammo - Federal Hydrashoks.  It's been sitting untouched in my safe ever since.

Had a 1st gen kimber Polymer custom , flawless, loved it, some twat broke in and stole it, had a Kimber Ultra Ten II in , started off a bit shit, got itself together eventually but couldn't be trusted, had this 2nd gen Polymer pro for a couple of years, replaced the recoil spring and guide with an ISMI set up and it's the tits. Absolutely reliable with mecgar 14 rounders.
Ugly little bastard though, and they may say the grip circumference is within a hair of a single stack 1911, but it feels like a family sized box of breakfast cereal.
Picked it up for about $550 off of GB

one of the 2 Kimbers I still own.

I have one of the Rock Islands, very similar to this one, and I absolutely love it.

How much that set you back?   If it was affordable, I might try one of them.   Do they use Para mags?

Yes.  Field stripped and cleaned after every range session.  Detail strip and cleaning usually 1-2 times a year.  Bought it new in 1995.  I'll probably replace the springs if I ever feel the urge to start playing with it again.

thanks was wondering if a simple tweak of the extractor or a new recoil spring would solve the problem.

We sell them for $449.99, but they're on back order at the moment. They'll take the Para P14 and Para P15 mags. My new favorite is the 20-rounders from ProMag.

I have a Para P14-45 that is a commemorative gun sold to those who served in Iraq or Afghanistan.  I bought mine used.

I had some problems with the hammer/sear combo and had to replace them.  I had the hammer following forward under firing.

I also had some problems feeding hollow points.  My gunsmith fixed this for me also, feeds awesome now.

I have had no magazine issues.

Overall, I love the gun.  I carry it OWB sometimes in the winter months.  The magazine release doesn't agree with my IWB holster.

There may be a lot of haters, but it's hard to argue with 15 rounds of .45ACP coming out of something as accurate as a 1911.  It shoots just like a single stack, but just keeps on going!
