USP45 or Mark 23.
I have the USP45 Expert which is the competition variant USP. I've owned a Mark 23 as well. It's an awesome gun, but kind of a novelty. It's absolutely bomb proof though and one of the most insanely overbuilt handguns. If the world got nuked it'd be cockroaches left and Mark 23s. As for the USP45 vs FNX45, I'd go USP45 every day of the week and twice on Sunday. It's better built, more accurate, and just a more refined firearm. If you get a Tactical, Expert, or Elite model USP then you also get a great trigger. The FNX45 has slightly higher capacity and is cheaper if you want a suppressor host as it's a couple hundred bucks less than the USP45 Tactical, but that's it. The USP45 still holds 12 rounds of 45 AARP which is more than enough. |

Over the years in 45acp:
ODI Viking Seecamp 1911 S&W 645 Glock 21 HK USP45 (?) 1911 Para Ord double stack P14-45 XD45 XD45c(or it might be the M, whichever is the compact frame model) XD45Tactical Several variations of 1911 in there, if I could keep only 1 of them, it would be a 1911. All the others I can get in a different caliber, but a 1911 in any other caliber just isn't the same. Now if the question is actually which 1 gun would I keep not having any others at all, it would come down to probably either the G21 or the XD45, as they both have a higher mag capacity than a standard 1911. |

Have a Glock G21 4th Gen. It shoots good very reliable never had a malfunction shooting any type of ammo. Mags hold 13 rounds of 45ACP it is more accurate than I can shoot it. I keep a few extra parts to keep it running. I couldn't ask for much more out of any pistol. But in all fairness I wouldn't feel under gunned with a good standard 1911 that I have shot and knew it worked well. It comes down to what you want I think. I've had three 1911's over the years but, I always trade them for some reason. The next 1911 will be a keeper.

HK45C all day. Suppressed well. Same size as a G19. 8 or 10 rnd mags. Accurate... What else would you want.
|
|
If it needs to be a "serious" gun, the glock 21 isn't a bad choice. But since my "work" guns are 9mm, I'm going with Mark 23.
If you want to bridge the gap between sensible and the special sauce .45, USP45 Tactical would be a mighty fine choice. |

My Springfield XDS45 3.3"
That's the one I would keep if I only kept one 45-ACP. To my knowledge it still holds 2nd place for the thinnest overall semi-auto 45-ACP and it's a lot lighter weight then 1st place which is a steel frame blowback without a true locked breach like the XDS45 has. It is an actual "semi-auto pocket pistol" in 45-ACP. And mine is very accurate for such a small gun, I've center punched a couple deer with mine right in the boiler room at 20-to-35 yards range because I risked spooking them if I tried to get the slug gun off my back where it was slung (weapons restricted hunting zones, no high powered rifles for safety reasons, shotguns with slugs/buckshot, conventional handguns, muzzleloaders, and archery only). The standard 5+1 capacity is a little more like a revolver then a semi-auto but the reload is quick and your reloads can be 7 round mags and it is thinner then any revolver except one of those NAA minis which it is basically tied with at it's thickest. Heck a lot of 9x19 semi-autos are thicker then it is! |

Kind of in a similar situation as you OP. Bought a new CZ 97 BD on a whim from LGS at a very high price (~$950), you know supply vs demand. But then now thinking at that price, should have added a few bucks more and had got a 1911. Miss my 1911 :( since I sold my SA loaded in hopes of getting something higher end.
Have a WV State Police S&W 4566 and its a hoot to shoot. Actually it shoots better than my former SA 1911 and I like it better. Magazine availability is a bit tough though. |

1911 5 inch government model.
Colt, Springfield or Dan Wesson. All 3 have models at various price points. Runner up to Sig 220 If I could have only 1 handgun look below Attached File |

I’ll never get rid of my 220, I think they are the most reliable pistols I have seen/shot. I’ve seen a few that were neglected by a couple of our deputies and after an ass chewing I marveled at how those pistols actually functioned. It was hard as heel to open the action by hand because so much dirt, lint, grim and crud was in the internals. In the mid 90s I had a G21 and that thing was reliable and very accurate. It fit my hand pretty well, I have large mitts and the big Glocks feel good in my hands. I’ve shot a USP and it didn’t do anything for me, I’ve never liked 1911s except for the few customs I have shot but there no way I’m spending $2,500+ on a pistol. |
|
Consensus seems to revolve around 1911 from what I am seeing. Some beautiful pieces in the posts above, thanks for all the input.
I definitely will keep the G21. For what I paid for it would not make sense to get rid of it. On to the EE to shop for one now. Thanks folks. |

I really like my M&P 2.0 .45.
It's basically a 9mm with a slightly longer grip. I did a lot of searching on this and compared the 9mm and .45 versions and from what I can tell all of the M&P dimensionally it is identical to the 9mm minus grip length and some extra milling on the 9mm version to thin out the slide. It also uses all the same parts as the 9mm version except the trigger bar, locking block, and ejector. Best part is mags are cheap, you can get used .45 mags for like $12.00. |
|
My first handgun ever was a Glock 21 back in 2001. I just picked up another one about 4 months ago. I actually grew up shooting 1911 pistols. Carried them through out the assault weapon ban. I feel you should keep the Glock 21 and maybe have a few 1911 pistols for the collection. But as already pointed out, carry the Glock 21 if you shoot it well. They are great guns. Just a bit big on the grip but mine has a grip reduction and it is so much better.

Probably my 625.
I love my 1911's but my 625's are more fun. |

If I could only have one 1911 .45 it'd be a lightweight Government model. Much nicer to carry than an all steel model but with the same 5 inch barrel and sight plane as well as a nice SA trigger. Recoil doesn't seem much different (to me anyway) if that's important.
Other than a 1911 the only other .45 I'd consider would be the Smith M&P. I have one beside the bed with a 14 round magazine full of 230 grain HST's, They shoot very well and have a rail for a light if wanted. I've tried Glock's and have 4 of but the M&P's beat them when it comes to how they feel in the hand, point more naturally and have a better trigger imo. |

Have had a few 1911’s over the years and they are a joy to shoot, though I never carried them that often. I good belt and holster makes it doable all day, but still didn’t do it much. Only have one now, a minty 1951 Govt model that is really nice to look at
Have had a few P220’s, both single action and traditional DA/SA. They were all great guns, only reason why i got rid of them is I was more of a 9mm guy than 45. At times I do wish I still had one, as they were great shooters Recently picked up a G30S, but with the ammo shortages i haven’t shot it yet . I was always interested in this model and came across a great deal i just couldn’t pass up. Looking forward to giving it a go at the range, as I could see this becoming a regular carry gun...once I get some ammo. Until I shoot the Glock, my pick would be the P220. Not because it’s better than the 1911, but more practical. 1911’s are great, but the DA/SA P220 is a great all around option for just about every use. |

I did the same thing a few years back. I didn't like the fat ol G21, so it went down the road and my 1911's are only in .45 and all of my other pistols are 9mm.
Might add a 9mm 1911 in the way of a Staccato P, but will not be adding new .45 platforms and will not be branching out into any other caliber in higher use pistols. |

USP 45 can do .45 Super just fine as well and only needs a spring swap (actually not even "needs" just strongly recommended). Despite its looks the Mark 23 is not nearly as much of a handful and way the hell more durable and reliable than a Desert Eagle for that matter. If you can get a good grip on a USP 45 you can probably handle a Mark 23 just fine. |

I came here looking for advice on how to thin my collection, but as expected I ended up with more than what I started out with:
Picked up a FNX 45 Tactical with RDS from the EE. Trying to get a HK MK23 but they seem to be on a 2-3 month back log, and people want new money for used ones on GB. Can’t decide which 1911 to get yet. Looked at a couple of dozen (DW, WC, Colt) and have narrowed it down to 4. There just can’t be one 45. Hopefully ammo comes to it senses soon. |

I don’t necessarily need the exact finish, as I am not looking for a collector item rather something I can have fun with. Trouble is people are asking new money for used ones. I can either pay $2k for a used one that I can have right now, or wait 2-4 months for a new one for the same price. Now if I can find one that has the SOCOM spec everything and is unfired I wouldn’t mind splurging a little more and thinking about retaining it as a collectible. But for now I want one to enjoy. |

My "only one" is an HK45CT, because I wanted it as a carry option too... if not, I'd go with the fullsize USP 45, which is much softer shooting. If weatherproof considerations weren't a thing, might go for a 1911.
