I am a memeber of the local sportsmans club and they have built a new 5 lane outdoor range. I have asked that  they condsider IDPA shoots for both raising money fo rthe club and to expand the variety of choices at the club beyond skeet and trap shoots.

I have a Glock 34 but I often hear 9mm's aren't always the best for steel targets. I thought a 124 grain bullet should do the trick but many feel .45's do the trick or .40 calibers. I could aslo go with my Smith 4506 which should fit the required shooters box when starting.

1911's have a strong following and I owned one but it had it's draw backs from a personal perspective, those who love there's I support and salute you ( trying not to get flamed here). ANy recomendations would be appreciated.

I have hot competitions with both my G34 and 1911's never had a problem with any steel targets with either.  9mm is not as much of a pussy cartridge it is made out to be.

Many of the shooters for team Glock shoot G34's by the way and they do fine.

Steel is usually calibrated by shooting it with a 9mm. If steel targets (popper, plates, reed reactors) are not falling with center 9mm hits, they need to be recalibrated.
I've shot IDPA with 9mm for the past 3 years, no problems with steel whatsoever.

+1 to the above.  9mm will be fine on steel.

The G-34 is perfect.(and my favorite Glock)  Sounds like you're already good to go.

You need to download the rulebook and have a look at the classes. Have a look on the Brian Enos forums as well.
