It prevents foreign objects from inadvertently catching on the trigger, and causing a ND.

Back in the olden days (1970s) custom 1911 pistol builders would square off and checker trigger guards to place the support hand index finger on the squared part of the trigger guard to arguably hold the pistol down better during recoil.

Now everybody has pistols from the factory with squared trigger guards and that fad went away for the most part as it was not universally effective in holding down recoil.
