In the search for the ultimate in reliable 1911 magazines that conform to the controlled feeding demanded by JMB, which are more highly regarded- Tripps Cobramags or the Checkmate/Colt/Metalform OEM hybrid follower mags? Up for consideration are the standard, flush base 7 rounders. Who wins in terms of long-term durability, reliability, and just overall quality? Are they both good? Who has enough rounds through them to be able to recommend either? Would rather buy right the first time- not really into trial and error, I mostly enjoy shooting without cursing (the kids learn quickly, and mom knows who to blame). Thanks!

| It is hard to go wrong with the Checkmate if you are looking a flush fit 7 rounders. I think most would agree that Tripp has made a very durable 8 round mag, but for a 7 rounder it's hard not to go with an OEM manufacturer. For the record most of my mags are 8 round Checkmates and ACT/NOVAK's for the range and a few 7 round mags. I am by no means a high volume shooter. David |

Cant comment on the checkmate mags, but I do own 9 Tripp mags. Five for a Kimber Tactical custom 2 and four for a Kimber CDP ULTRA.
When I bought the Tactical it came with one seven round base Kimber mag. The gun ran perfect with it. I bought three Wilson ETM eight round mags and kept having a FTE with the 7th round in the mags. After hearing great things about the Tripps I gave them a shot. Problem solved, now have five tripp mags for the gun and it runs perfect. When I bought the CDP ULTRA, I did'nt think twice. I bought one flush seven round Tripp and three extended base seven round tripp cobra mags for it. We all know how finicky the 3" 1911s can be and after over 500 rounds of my FMJ reloads as well as Win. silvertip and Rem golden saber factory HP I have yet to have any type of malfunction with it. Tripp Cobra mags get my vote. |

I did my research too, the posts all come up with the same thing.
generally you cannot go wrong with Wilson, Tripp or Checkmate. I read the posts on the checkmate mags from 1911.org and decided for the price and reliablilty I would go that route. Got rid of my wilson and picked up checkmate instead. Even went with the 8 rounders. If you are sticking with 7 round ones, Again any of them will do, and if you want cheap and reliable, the springfield 7 rounders with the loaded coupon is the best bang for the buck. However for all I know they are checkmates. I know colts are. |
