Last I checked, they're still using the Beretta 92FS (M9) 9mm but Force Recon and special units have MEU (SOC) pistols, which is basically a custom built 1911 (in .45 ACP of course), built on Govt 1911 frames with a variety of contractor parts (Springfield, Caspian, etc).

This is correct.  Force uses the MEU(SOC) and Det 1 uses the ICQB, both of which are 1911s.  Everyone else gets the M9.

They recently ordered several thousand M9A1's from Beretta USA, though the contract isn't final until the end of this month.  Same as the M9 except with a light rail and a couple other doo-dads like nickel plated mags to resist corrosion.

Can you get one from your local gun dealer? What is the standard issue holster? Last visit to Washington DC security had a holster that strapped to the thigh. Any idea what it's name is and where can you get one?

Standard grip, just like regular M9.  Only difference I've heard of is the rail on the dust cover and the improved mags.
