I will be getting a USP 40 in variant 7 tomorrow, and I already know I'm going to hate the trigger. This is my first HK (have 2 Sigs, a Glock, and a Kimber), and from my understanding, changing variants is possible. Is this something a normal person can do or should I have HK do it? About how much am I looking at spending? I would really like to change it to variant 3. The only reason I am getting this gun is because I got it for such a great deal, and I've always wanted an HK (just not a DAO one).

Sorry for the newbie question, but I'm having a hard time finding the exact info I need. Thanks!

Sad to say changing from a DAO variant to a SA/DA variant is not as simple as changing from a V1 to a V3 or V9, which are all SA/DA but vary only is options with the safe/decock.
You are going to need more parts and more adjustment so while I normally advise doing a V change yourself when all is involved is a detent plate or control lever, in your case I think you should let HK do it because you are going to need more parts, such as a new hammer in addition to a CL and detent plate.

Contact HK for pricing.

What about a LEM trigger? Would that be cheaper than converting to SA/DA? Thanks for your help!

I picked up a V7 .40 yesterday for $449, I thought I was gonna hate trigger to.  I love it.  It is heavier and longer than I'm used to, (used to Glocks and SA) but not as bad as a lot of DAO guns I've fired.

Change to the LEM trigger by HK runs about $100.  I would say that changing from the DAO standard to the V 3 will be about the same price, maybe a bit more.  The biggest cost is going to be the hammer for the SA function.  I think you will be able to do either for about $150 total.  Right now CDNN has the LEM trigger kit for $50 so if you know a smith or can install it yourself, that might be the cheapest way, but doing so will void your warranty unless you have HK do it.  Some people put a lot of value of keeping their warranties in place.  Myself, I couldn't care less about warranties so I would do the LEM change myself or have a local smith do it.  Handgun shipping is just too costly these days unless you have your dealer ship it off to HK for you, then you won't have to pay overnight shipping and it can go USPS PM.

Well I've played with the trigger a bit, and still think I should convert it. I fired a Sig 229 DAK last weekend, and didn't like it much, so I figure I probably won't like the LEM trigger either. However, I love the ergonomics of the gun, so I think I'll just convert it to variant 1 or variant 3, forgetting about the cost.

Of course I will shoot it first, just to confirm. Is there any way to find local HK armorers? I really don't want to mail it to HK. Anyway, thanks for all your help!
