I'm looking to buy a used USP .45. It seems like all the ones I see for sale are Variant 1 with the safety/decocker on the left side. I'm a left handed shooter and would like the control lever on the right hand side (Variant 2). If I buy a used Variant 1, do you know if HK would be able to change it for a fee? Or am I stuck buying a new one to get the Variant I want?

A couple of options:
1) Change out the variant yourself.
2) Find the H&K approved gunsmith in the area and have him do it.

You might want to go to the H&K website for good info on either question.
I think it is a $20 option on the website to buy new guns w/ the different variants.

Switching from a right handed to a left handed control lever will cost you about $60 for a new control lever.  That is all you need.  You can buy it from Cals (out right now though) or you could put in a ambi safety/decock, about the same price.  Also, Marc at OPS2 might have them.
To put it in is a piece of cake.  If you can walk and chew gum you can do it.  Just use the detailed strip instructions from here but, of course, don't do any more than needed to change out the CL.

I was in the same situation as you when I bought my USP45F a couple of years ago. Bought an ambi safety and since I was in there, a match trigger. Changeout was pretty straight forward.  The match trigger is very nice and made it that much better. Just something to consider.

The ambi safety actually has an advantage. When taking off the safety, you can't accidentally decock because the safety lever hits the back of your hand. You have to intentionally want to put the safety on.

Well thanks for the help. I read on their website that due to its "modular design" it can be done. I just wasn't sure if it can be done by joe anybody, or had to be done by  a gunsmith. Well it looks like I'll still be able to save a few bucks getting it used.

Go ambi. You can do it yourself.
