I'll probably pick up one of these 2 (Full sized, in 9mm, of course. I stick to current service calibers with the exception of the PPK) once I get back to the states....

So, what I want to know is:

IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE? Is the P2000 even available in 'full size' or is it a 'compact only' product?

I'd be looking for a Variant 1 or Variant 9 (DA/SA with safety - with or without decocker is irrelevant to me)

The 2 pistols look very similar - what did HK change between the USP and P2000?

As far as I know there is no full size P2000. The P2000 is a compact and they also have a sub-compact, the P2000 SK. The USP however comes in full size and compact. You can also get a tactical USP which allows for silencers.

The main difference is that the P2000 has the LEM trigger which is a pre-cocked hammer system making it similar to a glock. Like a DAO, but an easier, crisper pull. The other main feature is interchangeable back straps so that you can find a good fit for your hand. It comes with 3 straps and the key to change them.

In 9mm, without a magazine a USP weighs 1.65lbs, 15rnd capacity. USP compact weighs 1.47lbs, 13 rnd capacity. P2000 is 1.40lbs, 13 rnd capacity. P2000 SK is 1.30lbs, 10rnd capacity. Of course, they all can have 1 in the pipe too.

The USP's and USP compacts have several different configurations and if you're looking for DA/SA with safety this is the gun to get. The P2000 being a DAO (not technically, but...) does not have a safety. The USP can be changed from DA/SA to DAO and even to the LEM which is the trigger system used in the P2000. The other configurations mainly have to do with whether it has a safety, safety and decocker, and which side the levers go on. Both the USP's and P2000 have the easy to reach slide release(ambi on the P2k) and ambidextrous mag release. The USP's do not have the interchangeable backstraps however.

Barring the above differences they look very similar other than different grips and levers depending on which configuration the USP is in. As for grip angle and how the P2000 points I'm not sure if it's any different than the USP.

Try em out, as well as other guns, and see what you like. If you want DA/SA then P2000 isn't the one to get. However, if you try it out and like the LEM trigger remember that you can also get the USP with it. So if you ever want to switch from DA/SA to LEM you can. It takes additional parts, but I believe most conversions are simple enough to do yourself.

This is my understanding as well.

You can also get P2000 and P2000SKs in DA/SA as well. However, they typically do not have a manual safety.

Thanks...

USP it will be...

Right now, I have a Beretta 92, 2 1911s and a PPK. The 92 is my 'favorite', however I'm not a fan of the euro-style safety system & want a modern 9mm with the 'plusses' of the Beretta, but control functionality similar to the 45...

The USP seems to be the best candidate for this....

The USP is a good choice.

P2000 only comes in compact and sup-compact.  The new P30 comes in a slightly (I believe) larger size with 15rd metal mags.

USP is the only way to go if you like manual safeties.

In my honest opinion, the P2000 has a smoother trigger than the USP.

Any HK is a good bet though.

USPs are easy to work on. if i were you, i would buy variant 1. when you get tired of the decock function, you can buy a new detent plate form HK and install it yourself to get you to variant 9.

Between USPc and P2000, I would pick P2000 for few reasons. USPc has things that P2000 does not have, and P2000 has stuff that USPc does not have.

Looks wise, I really like full size USP and P2000sk due to the trigger guards.
