Went to the range to fire my USP compact for the first time. And about 2/3 of the time I would load a new mag with the slide locked back, it would drop the slide forward on its own, just as if I had hit the slide release.

What could be the cause of this?

EDIT: ok, I just read in the manual that this happens when the mag is forcefully inserted. So I guess I'm curious as to why this design feature?

It's not necessarily a "design feature", just happens to many types of auto pistols.

Simple matter of physics and leverage, if they designed the slide lock to positively hold back the slide then you wouldn't be able to release it with thumb pressure.

I guess it was weird to me because it did it so often, and it never happened with my Sig.

I could do it everytime with my uspc in 9. I thought of it a 'feature'.

You are slamming the mags into the weapon, the inertia causes the slide catch to release.

My USPc in .40 did the same thing. I considered it a feature as well.

Yep. Kind of like a built in automatic slid release (my old G19 would do it as well).

Yep, same here.

It all depends on how much force you use to insert the mag.

Slam it in and it'll do it most every time.

Slide it in and you'll have to rack it or use the thumb release.

Yep. Not un-common.

FEATURE...

IE, you're back in the fight THAT MUCH SOONER.....

Try it sometime...Fire till dry, drop and reload, slam the new mag in, and fire again...Works good, lasts a long time!!!

The nature of autopistols.

Lots of them do this.

Google this thing and you'll find a lot of people debating whether this is a "feature" or not.  Personally I don't like to slam it in there, because I don't want that one time it chambers a round that I'm not ready for and BAM!  I think I'm just more paranoid than anything...

I've found with my USPf .40 that I can still hit the mag in there with a reasonable amount of force to make sure the mag is seated and it won't release the slide.  So a lot of force isn't neccesary, but its all about personal preference.

It doesn't take much force to lock a HK mag in the pistol, if you bitch slap it in the slide will follow.

Yep, one of the guys in my classat FLETC found out the hard way why you want to keep your finger indexed during magazine exchanges.  It was an "oh shite" moment to say the least.

Thankfully no-one was harmed it the making of this story.

ka

PS, shooting the USPc .40 with the LEM trigger.

they originally came like that but they changed it so that it wouldn't do slam shut. but if you use enough force which most of us do it will shut

AHHHH THE Combat Slap, perfectly acceptable. Just make sure you keep it pointed up and down range in a safe direction when you load. Helps with fast reloads.

I love this "Feature" when using my USPs in competition.  Makes mag changes faster...except when I don't do it hard enough and it doesn't work.

The first time I read about this "feature" on the G19 I was like "my G19 has never done that".  I took my gun and slammed a mag into it and sure enough the slide slid closed.  I just never hammered the mags in that hard.  I've never had my USPc.45 do that but I guess I'm not rough enough with it.

What'd you expect out of your fellow aviators? I really need to get off my arse and do the FFDO thing...
