Anybody run into this? Happened 80% of the time at the range today, mostly shooting 115gr federal aluminum, but also a magazine of Aguila 124gr. The slide locks back when I open it on an empty mag by hand, but mostly doesn't at the end of a magazine when shooting. Is this something springs would fix, an ammo issue, or something else?

e: This was across three magazines

I'm about 99% certain your shooting hand thumb is hitting the slide release lever.  It's a pretty common complaint with the VP9, and I do it from time to time if I don't pay attention to where my thumbs are.  Try shooting it left handed and see if you get the same result.

Well actually I am a lefty

Though there could be something to that, I just grabbed it as I would to fire and I'm coming into contact with the slide release. I'll bring it to the range and try to shoot it with that in mind

Could be you're hitting the left side lever I suppose, although that one's quite a bit lower profile.  Shoot it one handed then, with your thumb away from the lever. Or right handed if you like.

ETA:   I was saving that last 1% of sureness on the chance you were a lefty

I am a lefty and own a VP9. If you shoot thumbs foward, you are probably riding the slide release. I switched to shooting thumbs curled down, and the problem went away.

That's a bummer, but further playing around with it looks like you guys are right. I'll see if I can correct myself on this before I do something like just go back to a G19. The VP9 fits my hand great, and is a fantastic shooter so hopefully this won't remain a showstopper

I'm a 1911 shooter and I have to keep my thumbs forward and down as not to engage the slide release, otherwise I have the same problem.

It's in the OP, 115gr Federal aluminum and Aguila 124gr

I had the exact same problem when I first got my vp9.  I had shot glocks for years with a high thumb hold.  Once I figured out it was my grip that was causing the lack of slide hold back on last round I had to decide if I wanted to train for a change or just go back to the glock.  I went with more practice with a new grip and I no longer have the slide lock issue.  Great gun, easy to carry and shoot plus I found no loss in effectiveness when I move back to glocks.

You're hitting that slide lock...

I do it...no shame...

I've never had a pistol with the lock in that location...still getting used to it...

Put a few more mags through it today, when I conciously make sure my hands are out of the way it does indeed lock back. Still feels very unnatural, I'll keep it for another case or so and see if I can't make it work for me, just seems a damn poor place for a slide release to me.

People should own Sigs, it teaches you to adapt your thumbs

The great part about being a lefty is that I've never run into this issue on the sigs I've owned, or really any other gun. Is this a common issue for you damned normies?

The VP9 is otherwise a fantastic pistol, and I'm accurate and quick on it (moreso than I would expect without practice), but I might have to just go back to sigs or the G19. Is there a way to remove the slide release on the right side of the gun?

It is.

It's almost exactly the same location as the safety on a USP or 1911.

German engineers don't understand modern handgun shooting and don't grasp that you should have your thumb there.  US engineers are little better.

There you go again, putting out wrong information again.

It's a common issue for stubbornly ignorant people who cannot adapt to other pistols, who insist on making everyone liking one way of doing things to one pistol over...

...adapting to a universal way and having no issues at all with any of them.

Shocking!

By the way, I am ambidextrous I shoot rifles with  my left and pistols with my right.
