I bought a 2.5" Wilton Junior vise to do the easy and minor work on pistols I do occasionally.  This was based on seeing a setup at a local gunsmith shop that looked pretty effective particularly with a Pow-R-Arm (an extended 360 degree ball swivel base).  I was surprised to see when looking at pictures of the Heirloom Precision shop that it is stocked with much larger vises.  Looks like 4"-5" models.  These seem like awfully big vises for work on pistols.  Is this about bearing surface of the jaws?  Stability?  Setting up a work area and I have a big vise.. but seems overkill.
