I am the original owner of a 1993 West German Sig Sauer P220 pistol. Although I've only fired about 500 rounds out of her so far, I would like to purchase a couple of replacement recoil springs.

I understand that the "older" P220's recoil spring had a factory 15# rating and was black in color. I also understand that the newer factory P220 recoil springs have a 20# rating and is painted green. For some reason, my original owner's manual does not disclose the recoil spring # rating for my pistol.

The recoil spring currently in my P220 is dark grey metallic in appearance but it does have some green paint splashed around the center.

Is this a 15# or 20# recoil spring?

I want my replacement springs to match the original factory # rating originally suited for my particular handgun. I think it's a 20 pounder, but I am not sure and I would like to definetly determine this before I go ahead with my purchase.

BTW, I only shoot FMJ and I have no intention of introducing any "hot loads" in my gun. Any information on this matter will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If I recall correctly, your 1993 model should use the 20-lb recoil spring. The P-220 that I bougt in 1994 had the green colored spring from the factory. Is the factory spring on your P-220 a single coiled spring or is it a multi-coiled spring? If you have any doubts, I would call Sig directly as they should be able to answer based on your serial number.

I'm thinking a 20lb spring would be OEM for your sig.

I just got a P220 parts kit from Top Gun Supply and it comes with a shorter red spring (for the 220 compact) and a green spring for the full sized 220.  They sell recoil springs individually also.  Great dealer, highly recommended.

I have an older stamped slide 220 (1979) that came with a very worn double wire wound spring. I replaced it with a 20# spring and it immediately started stovepiping unless it was held in a death grip. It was entirely too strong for that gun so I went back to an original 15# spring.
