How do you retain your weapon if someone makes a grab for it? I carry in one of 3 modes: three o'clock with an IWB holster, three o'clock with a ClipDraw, and twelve o'clock with a SmartCarry.

Now obviously, there's only one way to respond if someone makes a grab for the SmartCarry (it involves a swift kick to the nats), but what of the other locations? I've seen one technique where the officer grabs the wrist of the offender and presses down, but what happens next?

At that point you lay in to the guy with the other hand.  My personal favorite is a flat palm strike to the nose.  Your priority it to have control of your weapon.  If a cop, judge, layer, asks why you killed the guy by shoving nose fragments into his brain (This is exceedingly rare to do accidentally) you simply state he had a hold of your gun and you assumed he was going to shoot you with it.

NO, its actually quite imposible to do. This is another Martial Arts mith. A hell-palm strike to the septum will hurt like hell (lot of nerves there) and will bring about uncontrollable tearing of the eyes, limiting vision.

To answer the question, cover the hand that its trying to grab the weapon, drop your center of gravity and pound him with your free arm.

I used to believe it until I got a book by  (IIRC) Bruce Tegner, a martial arts instructor. He likens the act to pushing a pencil eraser through a brick wall.

What happened is, back in the day, they'd see a dead body on the battlefield, whose nose was broken and flattened into his face, and conclude that his nose was shoved back into his brain. In fact, the sheer accelleration of being able to do that much damage either damaged the brain, or broke the victim's neck. But when you are burying a battlefield full of dead guys, you don't stop for a post-mortem!

Shove a blade in his neck!

As was mentioned above strikes with the off-hand can be used too.

My CCW class showed retention techniques.

If they come from behind, take both of your hands and cover his hand/the gun.

Drop down and away.  Pulling him off balance.

You should be on one knee and the attacker on their back.  Stand back up and draw down.

It takes some practice.  Get someone to help you with it.

There was another one for shoulder holster carry.  I can't remember that move.

Just remember YOUR primary focus should be to keep that weapon holstered/out of their hands.
