I had my Glock 26 disassemble for about six months and went to put it all back together again, popped the recoil spring assembly back in and put the slide back on the frame, racked it and....out pops the guide rod from the whole assembly through the frame hole in the front.

Any ideas why this happened?

Nope, didn't touch the assembly, at all.

Just took it out and put it back in again today and this happened.

This happens, nothing is wrong with the spring.  What happened is that the rear of the recoil spring assembly slipped from where it was seated on the barrel, causing this foolishness.  There are two ways to fix it, if you haven't already:  1) try twisting and pushing the spring up and down a little bit to see if it will re-seat from the front or 2) Get the rear slide cover plate off and take out the out the firing pin assembly and you should be able to take the slide right off, this may require a second set of hands or a sturdy surface to push the front of the slide down on, since the slide probably won't lock back.  Good luck.

If you take the slide off, you can't just put it back on the frame without re-seating the RSA into the half-moon notch in the barrel lug. Or else this happens.

Fortunately, it did not cause a problem getting the slide off, no issues there.

Thanks for taking the time to share the advice bro, I appreciate it.

Yes, I wish it were that easy a "fix" but ... the RSA was installed back in the slide, over the barrel, on the lug correctly, which is why this truly baffles me. I made sure to do it several times and same issue. I'm not a Glock noob, by the way...so just seriously and truly weird scheiss at this point.

Ok, I lied maybe your spring is jacked up then.  Or, maybe the notch where it sits on the barrel was machined incorrectly.  Do you have any other Glocks to compare parts with and/or swap to see if the same issue occurs?

Did you put he spring in backwards?

Since nobody has asked, why did you have your 26 disassembled for 6 months?

So, you can replicate this over and over? If so, and it sounds like you know how to reassemble the pistol, maybe he RSA is bad. Keep us posted.

Am checking it out now....

OK, duh.......I very carefully made sure rear of the RSA was in the "half moon" on the lug and ... no more problems.

Thanks guys...Like I said, I've not had this G26 put together for quite some time and I guess I just got used to quickly reassembling my other [larger] Glocks and never had this issue before.

So chalk this up to a software, not a hardware, problem.

is the RSA marked 0-8-1?

...and in an older thread someone said to me that this isn't an issue with gen 4s.

If you take it back apart and reassemble it should be good to go.

I was just about to ask, so couldn't' this happen to all Gen4 models?

PROBLEM SOLVED...MERELY HUMAN ERROR...NOT A PROBLEM WITH GLOCK

If it's not seated in the half moon it will catch on part of the frame as you assemble it, not letting the rear of the spring assembly go back far enough.

Glad you figured it out.

I was trying to help you understand why the cutout in the barrel was important, as it was brought up both the a) slide, and b) spring might possibly be bad, both of which are not the case.   The spring not seated all the way in the cutout causes the spring assembly to catch on the frame, which was not mentioned in any post before mine.
