| What would be the best simple G.I style 1911 for CCW/SHTF gun?I like bare bones,reliability. |
| The smallest amount of cash I'd shell out for a 1911 and expect reliability from would be the Springfield MC operator. The 1911 isn't exactly a gun where you can go cheap and expect great reliability. If you do decide on a GI gun, I'd recommend not running hollow points through it, just FMJ, and quality mags. |

Haven't tried JHP's in my Colts or SA's, but on FMJ's my GI and Colt 70s run like champs +1. My Springfield GI has been running WWB Personal Defense 230 JHP, Federal Hydrashok 185Gr, Hornady TAP 200gr JHP, and Master Cartridge 230 Gr JHP +P (This load uses Speer's freaking big mouth JHP). Perfect record of feed, fire, extract, and eject. (Exception was once when I bumped the slide stop and caused the slide to lock before chambering the last round in the mag. Not the guns fault or the ammo, just me trying different hand placement and grip.) |
| I have been shooting S&W 1911's, SA MilSpec's, SA "loaded" Dan Wesson's, Para Ordnance, and other SA's, and in my early years in the Infantry, Remington Rands....all were very reliable handguns and none cost as much as a SA MC Operator. I expect the same reliability out of the new Colt 1911 series 70 I just bought....haven't received it yet, but I know it will work. |

That kinda shit could get you killed, any mechanical device could fail, and lemons happen. Faith is one thing, blind faith is another.
Let me ask you this, where you running hollow points through those guns? Because if you were running FMJ only, that's fine and to be expected. If you have a 1911 that routinely chokes on FMJ, your gun is an unreliable POS. To the other poster, I'll be quite honest I wouldn't feel 100% safe running HP's through a gun that doesn't have a polished feed ramp and a throated chamber, I'd start to wonder if I'm going to get a feedway stoppage, IMO it's a matter of time. And a 1911 that has a lot of MIM parts on the inside? that's bad mojo, I'd get that shit swapped out ASAP. When the low end 1911s are compared to higher end 1911's, the barrels aren't as good, the sights aren't as good, the fitting isn't as good, the internal parts aren't as good, the trigger isn't as good, I could could go on and on. Oh, and the guns themselves aren't as mechanically accurate, so I mean you're really missing out on the 1911 experience... A V6 camry is the same as a corvette right... it's "just a car" right? When it comes to a CCW/SHTF gun, I wouldn't cut costs. A gun is a life saving device, not a TV or DVD player. If your gun knocks out on you when you need it most? You're fucking dead. Your life is worth more than a dollar amount just north of $500, so protect it with something of better quality. |

Listen Bud, I'm no newbie to the 1911....I know very well the value of breaking in a 1911 before calling it fit for duty, I just meant I expect good things from the Colt, like I have all of the others....and yes I do shoot JHP's as well as ball ammo. I have been using the 1911 for over thirty years. |

With this single post you demonstrate just how little you know about the 1911. You have more wives tails in here then fact. |

The Colt 1991 has less MIM parts in it then many a factory "hi end" does, depending on the company. My $400.00 1991 has NEVER missed a beat. It runs and runs and runs and tho the cheapest 1911 in the stable [and I have a "few"] it's one of my favorites and I wouldn't hesitate to grab it if my life depended on it. |

Colt 70, Springfield GI, Colt 1991 To the original poster...this. Hard to go wrong with any of the above three. Like someone else mentioned, if you intend on CCW go the Springfield Mil-Spec route. From Springfield Armory's site... A step up fron the G.I, the Mil-Spec includes many improvements utilized by the US military during the 1911's years of service. These features include: High profile 3-dot sights, high hand grip, beveled magazine well, polished feed ramp and throated barrel. lowered and flared ejection port, and angled slide serrations. It's about as bare as one would recommend and still retain several features important to good shot placement...such as decent sights. It's pretty basic and I believe embodies what you described wanting. |
