the most inexpensive 1911? Where can I find an inexpensive .40 cal?

Prolly the least expensive .40 1911 I can think of is the Para 16-40.

It's more or less a 1911, if you can consider a double stack with an LDA trigger a 1911.

I personally think the LDA trigger is an unsafe firearm to trust your life to.  For a range gun I have no issues with it.

STI makes some but they aren't inexpensive.

Fusion Firearms has some but in the 1k area.

Kimber at least used to make some, don't know if they still do, but I believe they were 1k'ish also.

There is a 16-40 auctionarms right now for a buy it now of $550 - again it's LDA though and I really want to make it clear I will NEVER suggest that for a defensive handgun.

What about in .45....least expensive? Some one told me of a site one time that had some for around $400. I don't remember the site though.

Rock Island Armory .45s can be had between $300-400.  They are about as basic as you get.  Most people seem to love them.

I bought a used Kimber in .40 for $550 and ended up selling it for $600.  They can be found, you just have to look.

Can the back strap safeties on those guns be replaced? I really like the ones that curl up in the back.

You can find both Rock Island and Auto Ordnance 1911A1's in 350-400 price range.

Are all 1911 parts interchangable or where can I find those other strap safeties?

Crul up as in near the hammer? Most of those require fitting to your frame. (edit: this is called a grip saftey)

as long as the 45 is built within spec  all 45 parts will work on any 45 with no/some/heavy fitting required. It all depends on the part.

Yep the grip safety...the ones on Rock Island guns almost turn down...I like the ones that go up...Just my preference.

I'd suggest you do yourself a favor. If you are going to want to customize the pistol (like adding the beavertail grip safety you've already described) spend a bit more, and get yourself a Springfield Armory Mil Spec. This is a great base gun for future modifications, made from quality steel, with a great warranty from SA.

The RIA's are popular with the "most inexpensive" gun crowd, and from what I've read here, they'll perform fairly reliably out of the box. But there are corners cut to get to the price point they sell at (things like the quality of the steel used, and rigorous adherence to specs). Those corners cut do not make for a good platform for customization down the road (most quality 1911 'smiths would not perform custom work on such a gun).

So, buy the least expensive and run it and be happy..... or spend a bit more on something more substantial, and be happy, then improve it when the time is right.... choice is yours.

Other option and I know someone will have an issue with it, would be find a nice Norinco, at least those are near perfect copies of old Colts.

But all in all... If you are already plotting the replacement of a grip safety etc, all of which will add additional cost, when not spend a bit more and get a 1911 configured as you want it?

You could track down a used Kimber Custom II or SA pistol that has everything you want in the $500 range.
