I am thinking of a Colt 1991, but I would like some options.

Price range?

IMO I have no qualms with shelling out north of $500 for a life saving tool that lasts decades when properly cared for, but that's just me.

$500 and lower:
Rock Island Armory

Less than $1,000  - SW1911 series, Springfield loaded

at $1,000 - Springfield MC operator. This is where the "I'd carry this gun to save my life" line starts.... and the level of trust in the gun goes up with the price

at $1,300 Either a Springfield TRP or a Dan Wesson Valor

at $1,500 Les Baer or a TRP with das uber rail (da beamz yo)

at $1,700 Les Baer TRS

at $2,000 and above- wilson combat gun, a les baer, an ed brown, nighthawk, D&L, Yost, bob marvel, Novak, cylinder and slide, they're all good. But if it was my money, I'd go Miller Custom

Don't get the 1991... IMO for the buck the best gun you could get would be the springfield MC operator, or a Miller Custom 1911.

Springfield makes some fine pistols.  Just avoid the Imbel framed ones, they dont hold value like the US made ones, but they work just fine.

I have a TRP Tactical and an MC operator. Both are great, but I the Operator is better value and has a GI guide rod. Just wish the front grip was checkered like the TRP.

My Gun dealer has a used like new TRP for 1100, I think I will jump on it..he said it had never been fired, but it is used..

The best gun for the money (in its price range), good call.

I have a couple of them and I wouldn't trade them for anything.

I own a older 1991 [parked] and it has run FLAWLESSLY since the day I bought it.

Really all depends on what you want to spend and actually have to spend.

Do you want to buy new or are you willing to buy used?

I just picked up a Les Baer for a bit over a grand [cause of taxes] and I don't think the thing had ever been apart or shot more then a few hundred rounds.

Where is a good place to get grips for 1911's, the used TRP I am looking at has the ugliest grips I have ever seen on a handgun, they look like Formica.

Try Ajax but 1911 grips can be had from a plethora of dealers and companies. Almost any company that sells 1911 parts sill sell grips for them.

Ergo, VZ, Simonich are the nicest grips.  There's plenty to choose from, and the grips are easy to swap out, don't let that deter you from a nice pistol.

Thanks for the replies, I will post some pics as soon as I get it bought, it might be a month or two before I have it,   It's hard to spend $1100 without the wife finding out.

If yo spend that kind of coin then you didn't buy a Colt 1991, did you?

+ the above although I would replace Springfield Loaded with Sig GSR instead in the <$1k range.  I own both, the Sig is by far a much nicer pistol.

Isn't it great?  I thank the 1911 gods for the day I discovered the TRP.  Having owned a 1911 from just about every major manufacturer out there I'm glad I decided one day to plop down the cash for that shiny new TRP my dealer had years ago.

Now all I want to do is stuff my safe with more of them.

They look like they're made from the tiles on the floor in my high school cafeteria. WTF!

Only thing I could consider changing is the two piece guide rod with a Kimber 1 piece. I've never ever had good luck with the two piece units.

1050 OTD for a stainless TRP, I could live with having to change the grips out.
