In the market for a new handgun and I've made up my mind on a Glock.
My bro-in-law is a sherriff and swears by his glock in 357 sig round.  So here is the question.

357 sig, 40 cal (yes i know you can switch barrels on the 357 and 40, but entertain me here), or 45.  I do not want a compact or subcompact.

Give me pros and cons of each and which you would get if you were me.

Ill be using it for home defense, target shooting, etc

Thanks

I have both but the .45 acp has a larger frame than the 40/357
Get the one that fits you best.
Forget the 45GAP

I picked 45 because 9mm wasn't an option.  The only pistol I have sold recently was my G-23.  Never could warm to the 40 cal.  357 Sig ammo is effective, but very expensive.

I have limited all my pistols now to 9mm or 45 ACP.  I have 4 Glocks in 9mm and one in 45.  I would rather be able to afford shooting alot for practice than have a super stopper round that I could not hit with when needed.

I use a Glock 23.

Chose the .40S&W because the round has a little more mass than 9mm but the weapon isn't as big as the .45 models that don't fit my hand. Actually, I'm having a smith do some work on my 23 to make it's grip a little smaller too.

That's not a dig on 9mm. I'd be perfectlly happy with 9mm, but went the .40S&W route for something different. Then I decided to "standardize" on one calliber so .40 it is. So far I have been disciplined with sticking to that calliber for new weapons....we'll see how long that lasts.

.357sig is a very effective round...until you go to practice with it. Unless you have a free source of ammo, it's almost cost prohibitive to put in much range time.

9mm. .357 has a lot of downsides like cost and incredible noise, even if it shoots through car boddies like no other. .40 caliber Glocks are known to have issues and .45 caliber Glocks are massive.

In the calibers listed i voted .357 if u reload or can afford it its a great caliber.
.
I dont mind the grip of either gun but i love the 45 and the 357 both will knock a proverbial * * * * inta the dirt.
.
Good luck an Happy Hunting

PS the secret service an others use the 357 that outta say something for it.
.
Yes i know the 45 is one of my favs an classic as well.

Shoot one in each caliber and chose from that experience.

Where's the G19 option?

FAIL!

Why ?

I've been thinking of getting the 38.

I have the 17,19,21,21SF,26,29,30,36

If you want something that is a good all around try the 17 or 19, 9mm is cheaper to shoot a lot for practice, and 9mm+P is good for defense.

G17 should be in the poll.

Another write in vote for 9mm.  G17 or 19.  Everything else costs twice as much to shoot, with more recoil, fewer rounds and only a negligible increase in stopping power.  Plus the 9mm Glocks are by far the most consistently reliable.

As for the .45GAP, good luck buying ammo 5 years from now.

A Glock 20 (10mm). Because their can be only one.

You can get replacement barrels to change the caliber to .357 Sig and 40S&W  from Lone Wolf (and others no doubt).

If you insist on one of the above, I would get the .357 Sig. if you reload. Otherwise I like 40s.

Hmmm.  10mm to .357 Sig.  That would give you the choice of two different expensive ass, hard kicking rounds.  Of course, 9mm is just for pussies.

.45 all the way, unless you want a 10mm.

I have a G-21SF and when my gubment money comes in, I am getting a g-20 to add to the collection.

That .45 is a helluva pistol.

ETA: Of course, when I do get the new pistol, I'll have to sell the house to afford the ammo.

Don't count on 100% reliability with the 10mm to 357 conversion barrel, the round is so much shorter than the mag that it might sometimes not find it's way to the chamber before it is free of the mag and wind up pointing straight up. I've had this issue with my Lone Wolf 10-40 barrel. It is strictly a range barrel, unreliable but nice groups.

Of the 3, I'd go with the .40

I love my G23.  It's my CCW pistol of choice.  Having said that, if I were to only have one Glock it would be a G19.

I'm getting alot of 9mm replies.  I guess I should have put it on the poll.  As far as defense goes, is the 9mm a decent defense round?  I've heard a lot of $hit talking about it like "I'd rather have a 22 than a 9mm....that round is horrible...." kind of stuff..

Please fill me in. Is this myth proven or busted?

IMHO the 9mm+P+ is a good round and a G19 would be my choice if limited to only one handgun. Since you specify a 357, 40 or 45 full size, I'd lean toward the model 21 in 45auto provided your hands are on the larger side. I'm currently trying to decide on a compact in either 40 or 45 myself. Your decision is probably easier (If you are a 45 man) since the full size 45 only gives up 2 shots to the 40, but the 45 I'm considering (36) gives up 3-7 rounds to the 40s I'm looking at. (27,23)

The 10mm is actually my favorite round but unless you reload is an expensive SOB to feed. I like the 357 but it too is pricey to feed and really doesn't have a whole lot on the 9mm +P+ or the 40 and is more difficult to reload. Congratulations on your purchase and I hope you enjoy whichever pistol you end up buying.

Check out some of the tacked threads in the ammunition forum.  Ballistics are way more about shot placement, bullet weight retention, shot placement, energy transfer, shot placement, penetration depth and shot placement.

Oh, and shot placement.

Thanks for the info! that helped tons.  Believe i will go w/ a 9mm vs the others listed.  Now...decisions decisions....

The cost of 9mm per round vs all the others is SIGNIFICANTLY lower.  as many already know.  Like another poster said the 9mm+P is a good round.  Ive read alot just now on it and i am sold.  That will be loaded up for defense.  Wolf for the range  Thanks again!  EVERYONE!

I'm probably in the minority around here but believe the 9mm is at it's best when using 115-127 grain bullets loaded hot. Right now cheaperthandirt.com has Fed. 115+P+ for $15.50 per 50 round box. My favorite would be the 127 Winchester, they go for $25 or so on the net.
One neat thing about the 9mm Glocks is the ability to run the 33 round guetto mag for the G18.

the reason for the ammo shortage now is that there is too much demand for current production. Oh it's different...it must suck. there's alot of troopers who would argue that.

Get a G22 and buy a G31 barrel. That way you can shoot both .40 S&W and 357 Sig from it...the best of both worlds!

Any glocks are recommanded BUY!

Well, I had Glock 22, 19, 32c. Currently I only have G32c and still love em to death.
