I am not up on my 1911s but have a guy wanting to trade me a Wiley Clapp Commander, looks sweet and I've kind of been missing my commander I sold last year, but I have some questions:
1. I have an older Gold Cup that has thousands upon thousands of rounds through it (I shot USPSA with it), it has has always been reliable except when I wore out the extractor, would this pistol still be expected to deliver flawless performance or has Colt slipped in recent years? 2. How are the alloy frame pistols for longevity (I've only had steel frame 1911s)? 3. What kind of value would one place on this model if it was slightly used with ~20 rounds through it? |

Quoted:
Flawless performance from mine. It is a carry gun, not a range every day gun. I've read alloy frames are good for only 10,000rds to 50,000rds on the internets. That might be a good question for Colt. Interesting, I would want it to be a run hard range gun first, maybe an occasional carry second, might not be the gun for me then... ETA nevermind the guy isn't local so no trade |

My mid 1990's LW Commander is right at 30,000 rounds. I run bunny fart loads that barely make major 95% of the time. That's the secret to making the frame last. I run a couple of magazines of standard 45 through it every couple of months. Right now it's my only proper pistol. Reviews say it's a great gun if you can get past the front serrations. |
