Back story.  The year is 2010.  I was at the range with a buddy and he hands me a gun to shoot.  I shoot it and turn to him and tell him this is my gun.  The best gun I've ever shot in my life and I've shot a lot of guns.  He laughs.  Fast forward to last week, I'm at his house and he asks me if I want to buy it.  I didn't think he was serious but he was.  800 meticulous rounds through it.  He only shot ball ammo, no hollow points. I immediately say yes and go into liquidation mode.  Opened up my safe and sold everything that didn't serve a distinct role. I got it and here it is.  Tactical Elite with all the upgrades.  Point of post after photo.

So, I go to the range today and put 100 flawless rounds of ball through it and decide to try out my preferred carry round, HST 230 standard pressure.  This is a photo of the type of round:

Notice the crimp line on the casing?  I load a magazine.  After the second round, I get a jam.  I clear the malfunction and the case of the fired round comes out in two pieces!  I put it aside and open another box.  It happens again but this time the fractured part of the case is stuck in the barrel.  Had to take the gun apart and use a pick to get the casing out.  Here is the pick of the two identical pieces from two different rounds from two different boxes of factory fresh ammo:

Split clean right at the crimp line!  I've never seen or heard of this happening before.  I then put another 50 rounds of ball through it without a hiccup.  Any body have any ideas?  I don't think I will ever shoot HST through it again.

I'm in on this one. Never shot any HST out of my Wilson Combat, but it's by far the best handgun I've ever owned. Just bought their EDC-X9.

I'd try a few things first.... shoot a couple rounds of HST through another .45. Likely an ammo issue.

Federal and Wilson are both excellent companies. One of the 2 has an issue here that I'm sure they will make right

Sounds like a too tight chamber for this ammo with the crimp where it is. I'm no engineer but I would guess the crimp weakens the case just enough so that the tight(er) chamber exerts enough resistance when it extracts so that it splits at its weakest point.

That's MY story & I'm stickin' to it................

Shot the rest of a box through my Glock 21, no issues.

That makes total sense.  If you look, the split is not jagged.  Both rounds look like they were cut with a laser.

Your chamber is probably too tight.

All I shoot out of my Wilson combat is HST and PDX, and have never had that problem.

I am kind of disappointed to hear that, though.

So if I want to shoot HST do I need to send it in to Wilson?

Is it normal for the forward slide cuts not to match up with the frame ?

Whoa that's weird!! Never seen that before. But yeah it's probably just too tight a chamber. Yeah I'd send it off to Wilson, I hear they have good customer support.

Try an ammo with no crimp through the case

Or if you know someone near by with a relatively new reamer see if it will clean up the chamber.  Even the best manufacturers will try to use their tools till they reach minimum tolerances.

For a lower dollar gun I'd be right there with you... but for a Wilson, I'd suggest the manufacturer is the route to go.
