I was looking at an XD, the five inch tactical in .45... It fits my hand good, and I like it... BUT, a friend has a 4" XD .45, and he hates it because of the muzzle flip... He says that the bore is too high... Would the 5" have less muzzle flip? Any comments would be appreciated.
thanks

Porting helps. So does a full mag.

+1 to full mag.  My 4" XD get worse as the mag drains, but even with an empty mag, it is rather controlable for a 45.  Is your friend used to shooting smaller calibers?  ...could be why he thinks the flip is bad.  Never shot a 5" XD so can't answer that part of your question.

I shoot a Glock 19 and 26, and my wife has full-sized and sub-compact XD9s.  I notice more "flip" when I shoot her pistols than when I shoot mine.  Just an observation.

I honestly haven't noticed any appreciable muzzle flip on my XD45, though it sounds like I'm in the minority.  I shoot the XD45 and the 1911 the most out of any of my handguns, and they have a very similar recoil design and bore axis height.

+1.  No more than with one of my  1911s anyway.
Anyway, I prefer to stick with "the sun was in my eyes" excuse when I miss.

Ill let my friend know you said that...

I guess that is what I was wondering about... The 5" vs the 4" thing... Has anyone shot both the 4 and 5" XD in 45? How does the barrel lenght relate to muzzle-flip?

I have a 4" XD-45 Service.  I don't think the muzzle flip is any more than it is with my G19.

a buddy has the 4" and i have shot them side by side. the 4" may have had a bit more but i am not sure it was enough to be a concern to me.

I guess Im just going to have to get off my butt, and go shoot it myself... I sure did like the way it felt in my hand... Not near as big as the G21 or G21SF...

Muzzle flip with my .45 hasn't been an issue for me. No worse than my 1911.

OK, I shot his 4"... I didnt notice very much recoil at all... The only sharpness was on the last round, and it wasnt bad. Looks like I gotta get me a 5" Tactical now... Thanks!

I shot for my CHL this morning using my 45 Compact (4" barrel). Out of 16 shooters, I was the only to have a perfect score.

I had a hole center mass the size of a medium apple. Muzzle flip with my 4" has to be more than a 5", and my 4" has virtually zero.

Fuc*ing awesome pistol.

Edited for spelling.

I shot a 4" XD 45 that belonged to a friend at work on 3 different occasions.
I wanted to like it, because I'd heard so many good things about them and . . .
they were high cap 45's that felt really good in my hand.  After 3 trips to the range,
I just didn't like it enough to buy one. I did notice alot of muzzle flip. (and I do
shoot 1911's more than any other guns)  Like you . . . I wondered what the 5" XD 45
would be like, but I didn't know anyone who owned one. Curiosity got the best of me, so I just bought one. I LOVE this gun!!!  I love the grip, the capacity, and it is very,
very accurate!!  I've got some high end 1911's, but the 5" XD 45 Tactical is one of
my favorite guns to take to the range. It gets more accurate every time I shoot it.
Hope this helps.

I have both the 4" and 5" and I haven't noticed any real difference. I love all three of my XD 45's.

Ditto except I only have two.

I have the 4" and 5" also and have not noticed either. But I have no problem with the 4". All my .40s I have had have more muzzle flip. I am sure the extra weight on the 5" would help though.

There may be an "extra mass" guide rod that can help with that on the 4" too....

Or someone could just strengthen their wrists to Man strength...

I own both and haven't noticed much difference, although I would have to give the nod to the 4" for faster shot-to-shot recovery.  Neither one has any appreciable recoil, IMO.  They are good shooting guns.
