I called my local dealer today to see if they had an XDM.  They did!! After reading all the glowing reports and seeing all the nifty SA Adds for the new model, I had to see one.  I practically had already decided to buy one despite being the owner of a .45 service model.  I rushed right over money in hand.  Upon getting my hands on one I was dissapointed that all the new features seemed to be just cosmetic.  The pistol felt the same in my hand as the old one.  There was nothing special about the trigger that I could see.  The sights were nice however. Now consider the fact that the price is $100 over the standard model.  Don't get me wrong, it was nice, but not enough better IMHO than the regular XD.  I left the store empty handed.  Sure there are some improvements, and If I did not already have an XD I might have bought it.  For all of you who own an XD and  are considering the XDM I'd hold onto your money,

Just marketing to ask more money. I will stick with my standard XDs.

The big deal for some shooters is that is is truly a .40, not a .40 on a 9mm frame as the XD .40 is. This increased capacity will be a big deal for those who want to use it for duty or competition. You will be able to use it in USPSA Limited, Limited 10, and Production with no handicaps.

The new sights aren't nearly as good as Dawson or Heinie sights, the stock trigger still sucks.

With the small back straps and better slide serrations, people with really small hands will find it easier to use.

It isn't for everyone, but it does fill a void for a lot of people who could accept the limited capacity of the XD .40.

Can the XDM magazines be used in the standard production model?

I felt the same as you did when I handled one in my local shop.

No the XDM mags won't fit in the XD. They were designed for a .40 unlike the XD .40 mags which were designed on a 9mm mag.

How much was your dealer asking?  I just found one locally for $530.

I think I need to buy it.

I looked at them at the last gun show and was also disappointed.  Considerably bigger frame hinders concealment.  Didn't like the new grip either, and it ran $100 more than the standard XD.  They were around $600 at the gun show dealers.  Just a lot of hype and a stiffer price.

I held and shot one. I was amazed at how much better it was over the XD.

Faster target aquisition, the accuracy is amazing, and it fits my hand perfectly.

They look cooler too

none for me thanks

I have a 5" XD40 and a 4" XD45

I have handled the (M) and can find nothing to justify the extra cost.

YMMV

My son is thinking about getting a pistol.  I thought this might be a good one to put on the "list". Now I'm not sure.  I thought the "M" difference was the match barrel in the gun nothing else?  Maybe I should just tell him to get a Glock.........

Agreed. There was a huge difference in recoil and follow up shots between the XDM and the regular 5" XD40s.

I was impressed. One of the smoothest shooting .40's I've shot.

When they come out with a 9mm gun, I will take a look at it.

However, that grip is simply way too large for CCW. Great for competition, but I CCW all my handguns at one time or another...
