My daughters boyfriend just got an XD 45 and we went and shot it.
It is key holing worse than any gun I've ever seen.
We shot my reloads and factory ammo and there was no difference whatsoever.
I have several XDs and they are all great shooters.
Any ideas?

Wow! Is it new, or did he pick it up used? Is there visible rifling down the full length of the barrel?

What brand ammo? What bullet weight?

Have you called Springfield?  Lifetime warranty - no reason to not call them and have it checked out.

reloads were 200 grain JRN
and the factory ammo was Independence 230 gr JRN
The deal is that my 1911 shot both without issue and his XD shot both equally crappy.
The barrel has visible rifling that also appears to be stripping copper BAD.
I'm attempting to get the copper out with sweets right now.

Send it back. The barrel is probably out of spec or damaged from a bad round.

Keyholing is  a sure fire sign that something is VERY wrong.  Mostly, it means the barrel is not imparting a sufficient spin, which generally means you have a bad barrel.

When I shoot FMJ out of my 21SF the paper tears as if it were key holing, when I shoot HP  self defense ammo I get nice holes.  Maybe???

Oops just read you were shooting plated/jacketed bullets......

Maybe a bad barrel.  Too shallow rifling or possibly weak plated bullet that stripped off on the rifling like a lead bullet would have, preventing the bullets from engaging the rifling correctly.  Clean the barrel out good and try again with a FMJ bullet again and see what happens.  Could be the finish of the barrel is too rough and getting so copper fouled as to do the same.  Also the bore diameter might be slightly too large.

This might be too simple, but did you check for a damaged crown? If the end of the barrel got boogered up somehow, that could cause a problem.

First time plinking was just on a target when it appeared to be keyholing.
Second time plinking there was cardboard behind the target and it no longer appears to be keyholing.
The gun only had been shot once before he picked it up from his friend.
So far we've ran through 200 shells with it so maybe its just that the barrel needs to be broke in.

Just read the last few posts....
He cleaned it out really well after we went plinking this time so we'll see what happens next time.
Crown is fine, no appearance of damage at all.
Will keep you posted.

Sounds like it might have been just the way the target paper was ripping without any cardboard to support it from behind.

Why would the paper rip different, and consistently, between two different guns?

Hmmmm.  Didn't see they shot two different pistols witjh different results.

Just shot it with new cardboard backing.
No key holing. It was just tearing the unsupported paper.
I have seen key holing at its worst in the past and This sure looked like the real deal.
At any rate, the mystery still remains that my 1911 made perfectly round holes in the SAME targets with the SAME ammo.
Sorry to raise the S.O.S. flag about the XD.

At one time I had some keyholing with a Glock 22 using 155 gr Ranier plated bullets. These were my own reloads and I have shot 1000's of the same load with no trouble. This particlar instance continued for a few weeks. There was no damage to the gun as it normally shot fine. In hindsight I attributed it to poorly sized bullets from the factory, I have since had no problems. So, it is possible to fire the same load out of two different guns and get two diferent results. It doesn't mean the XD barrel is bad, it means that those particular bullets are not sized properly to that particular barrel.

I have read your posts and that you attribute it to unsupported targets, thats good. But the possibility of different guns liking different loads is real.

I'd suggest calling Springfield.  You'll probably have a new barrel on the way to you today.  They've been great to me in the past.

Edit:  Woops, I see you got it working  Glad to see it wasn't a flawed barrel.

The only time I ever had a handgun keyhole was with Hornady seconds, 230 gr FMJ. The bullets were safe to fire but had obvious punch/die marks in the noses.
