I have been pondering getting an XDm for range time and possibly competition. I like the fit of the grip but wondered how much of a difference the backstraps make in grip size? Such as how much of a difference does going from a large backstrap to the small make?

I have small hands and I run the large on my XDm. It just feels better, not to fat. And the traction is awesome.

I tested all three backstraps when I got my XDm and while the large isn't uncomfortable by any means (it's about like an XD .45), the medium is perfect for my hands (I have smallish hands as well).  I didn't care for the small backstrap at all though.

When I first got my XDm I used the medium back strap, then switched to the large back strap. It felt better in my hands. You will just have to try each one and find the one you like.

+1

I tried all three when I got mine as well.  My experience is identical.

I'm liking the small one, it makes it feel more like the straight grip angle of a 1911 with a flat mainspring housing.

Its sounding like I need to give it a test drive. Thanks for the input.

ask the salesman to let you try them out...

Keep in mind that the grip panels only change the girth on the lower 2/3 of the grip.  It does not change the distance from the backstrap to the trigger.  IMO, the interchangable backstraps are more about fitting the grip angle to you hands, making it more pointable for a variety of hands.

I have very large hands and ended settling on the medium size panel.  While the large was comfortable, it didn't point as well (muzzle high), for me. YMMV.

I've been using the medium since I got my XDm... I jam my hand up as high as possible and would like to try the large backstrap to see if it forces my hand a little higher up the grip.

I've got small hands as well.

small hands.  Medium backstrap for me as well.

I have large hands, but surprisingly I like the small backstrap best.  The pad of my finger sits on the trigger with the small one, but the large backstrap puts the bend of my first joint on the trigger.  I was surprised –– figured I'd have the large backstrap on there in no time.
