The triggers between my XDs and XDm are not really that differnt. The Ms also have a melted slide profile, and match barrels. But I agree with the previous post, XDs are a hell of a deal.
The Ms are also only avilable with a 4.5 barrel and standard grip length IE close enough to full size. If you are going to carry, the compact 45 (what I usually carry) or subcompact 9/40 (or even a service 9/40 with a grip chop mod and SC mags) is really the way to go. The XDm also does not need to have the trigger pulled for disassembly like the XDs do. Personally the XDs grip feels better to me, but the deal breaker for me was the increase capacity. The standard old school XD 40 holds 12 on the full size mag since it was built for the existing 9mm grip size, thus not a tru double stack. With the M they increased this to 16. The low capacity was so depressing for me, I mean even the full size 45 mags hold 13, 1 more than the 40, with a .05 increase in bullet size. I bought one of the first green XDms as soon as I heard SA was releasing them. Have not looked back a bit. |

Also check out http://www.xdtalk.com for a forum with a lot of additional good info on the XD line of pistols. If you going 9mm then it probably doesn't matter much either way. The old version can be had in 4 or 5 inch barrel length, the XDm comes with a 4.5 inch barrel. The old version is also available in a Sub-Compact with 3 inch barrel and short grip if CCW is your primary consideration. If your interested in a full size 40S&W version then I would suggest taking a serious look at the XDm since the older XD-40 was simply a retro fit into the original 9mm frame, thus capacity is severally limited. The magazine for the XD-40 have the same internal width as the 9mm magazine and thus you only get 12rd where most 40S&W magazine of that length get 14-15rds. The new XDm get 16. 
The top image is what how the rounds stack in an XDm or any true double stack magazine the bottom is how 40S&W rounds are stacked in the XD-40 magazine due to the narrow 9mm width magazine body they have to use to fit in the original 9mm frame. That said I have four XD's, three XD-40s (one of each size, Tactical, Service and Sub Compact) and an XD-45ACP Tactical. My XD-40 Tactical has over 15,000rds through it, its my USPSA competition Limited-10 gun. They have all been good reliable guns for me. The only bad thing I have read about the XDm is the trigger mechanism is a bit more complicated due to the additional mechanism require to eliminate the need to pull the trigger to field strip the weapon. The old XD take down procedure was: lock slide back, flip take down lever, return slide to battery, pull trigger, slide comes off towards the front. The new XDm makes it so the slide simple comes off after flipping the take down lever no need to pull the trigger to get the slide to come off the frame. This additional mechanism to make this possible does make doing trigger jobs and working on the trigger a little bit more difficult. rambling mcb |

It does fall in line with the OPs original question, yes the Serpa will fit all XDs, SC thru tactical, 9-45, and the Ms. The Ms hang about 0.5" out, and the tacticals, about 1.0" out. the SC will also LIGHTLY rub the take dwon lever since it sits about 0.25" high on the SC than all the other models. It however is no worse for wear. I also own a crossbreed super tuck, the M fits in there, just a little bit of space around the top corners of the slide since SA performs a factory slide melt job. But it will work. I can not comment on other specific holsters. |

Thanks I have one of the early XD 40's and had some finish issues with it (it wore off quite severely with every day carry). I was bummed out about it after having switched from my Glock23 that I had for years. I called Springfield, their customer service was top notch. Shipped it back, they refinished it and sent it back to me ASAP no cost to me besides shipping it to them. THREE THUMBS UP FOR THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! *EDIT* Oh by the way, supposedly they addressed the finish issues a while back. |
