I am fully converted to the cult of the 1911. I shot a Glock after using a 1911 for a couple of weeks - my God, it was terrible. You were right. The 1911 rules, and anyone who says otherwise is a filthy communist.

Now, I have to wait another five months before the government says I can buy one. I'm tossing up between a RIA in .38 Super and a Norinco in 9mm. Leaning towards the Rock at the moment. Comments, suggestions?

(And, before someone says "get a .45", I wish I could, but government says that, sure, you can own a caliber over .38 in diameter, but you can only use it for metallic silhouette, and not for IPSC or any other pistol sport. )

If you have to wait 5 months would there be any chance other brands might be an option?

Just a couple of thoughts.

Here, .38 Super will easily cost you twice as much as 9mm.
I have an RIA and I like it, but it took about 500 rounds before it ran reliably. There is a break in period for the RIAs, Armscor, the manufacturer states this clearly in the dicumentation.

Not sure about the Norincos.

Is .45 ACP not an option? Never mind read your gov't requirements.

Depending on your ammo cost(I've heard everything's high in your neck of the globe), I'd go with the RIA between the two.  If you could expand your choices at all, I might suggest a different brand's 9mm(no matter what, I've still got to think it'll be cheaper than .38 Super).  Take what I and anyone else here says with a grain of salt though, as we don't know what's available or at what price in your location.  If you like 1911's, and want to shoot with high ammo costs, maybe a Colt Ace in .22LR or a copy, might be your best choice for just sport as I'm not sure what your country's views on self defense with a firearm are.

Fly to Mexico then you can jump the fence in Mexico or swim the rio grand, we will welcome you with open arms. The people in congress want to make illegals legal so why not you?

The problem is, after you get past the cheapies the price shoots right up to about $1800 (for a SA Loaded, Kimber Target or STI Trojan), because most 1911s are made in the States and the dollar rises fucked us. But you never know.

I'd be using reloads, so ammo price isn't a concern re .38 v 9mm.
