What do you consider to be an acceptable magazine capacity in a carry weapon? I've got an XD compact, and I actually like the feel of the 10 rounders more than the 13 rounders. I think ten is fine, even 7 and 8 in the 1911s.

Some people may like small caliber, more mag capacity, like the glock 19, which carries 50% more in a magazine than my 10 rounders. So...

What is acceptable to you?

As much as I can but still within keeping a certain size.

I'm only willing to have less then 10 if it's an actual pocket gun.

Otherwise I want my 13-16 round capacity.

10 is my number... semi arbitrary though.

Many of the armed robberies and home invasions that have taken place in my area involve 2 or 3 attackers(sometimes more).  I train to zipper the torso with 3-4 rounds.  I would like my carry pistol to have the capacity to engage 3 attackers under optimal conditions before a reload.  That equates to 9-12 rounds, so 10+1 is what I would consider adequate.  More than that is just gravy.

That said, I carry either a Glock 19(15+1) or a CZ75(17+1 with newer Mec Gar mags).

Depends.

BUG, 5 rounds minimum. Preferably .357 mag, but I'll take 6+1 in a .380.
Primary, depends largely on caliber. 9mm will have to be 10+, .357 is again, 5 minimum. 45 ACP, 6+1 minimum(autoloader).

Pocket pistol (380 or 32, ala PPK)? 7

Service pistol? 15.

No wheelguns.

Double stack I'd say 15 rounds (Glock 19), single stack maybe 6 rounds (Ruger LCP, Kahr PM9 or P380).

ETA: Or a 5 shot S&W revolver (S&W 442/642, 640, 37-2).

More is always better.   But I'd say if I have less than 10 I'd want a spare mag, more than 10 and I may decide not to carry the extra mag.  That being said I think that FN finally has showed the world that you can have the best of both worlds with their USG FNP-45.  15+1 of .45acp.  Ends the debate on caliber wars right there.  You have high cap like a 9mm and the .45acp round...  I'm looking for one right now.  And could you imagine carrying a spare mag (or two)...  Up to 46 rounds (15x3 +1) of .45acp in condition one....

Depends on the size of the gun.

The more the better, though.

My P11 holds 13 rounds and is about the size of a J frame. I'd say I'm doing pretty well.

NY res. don't have much choice...
I do feel comfortable w/ 8+1 in the 1911 (w/ extra mag or 2)... As well as 15+1 in the Glock 19 (preban mag required)
We aren't allowed to enjoy the "fruits" of new tech in weaponry... 10+ mags must be preban (15 years old)

I'll take as many as I can get in a pistol that fits me well, does the job a 100% and is concealable for me.
My current main CCW, a Bersa Ultra Compact Pro 9mm, holds 13, but if someday someone finally make a new gun, using new ammo that will get the job done and has a capacity of a couple hundred rounds or more, I'm not going to frown for one second.
It may take only one or two shots in most conflicts, but I don't plan ahead to just have the minimum. I couldn't force myself to carry a revolver these days no more than I could force myself to get on I-95 in a horse and buggy.

Sounds like my XD45 compact would be perfect there. I rarely use the 13 round mags, for whatever reason. It would be nice to have those if the SHTF, though.

Some very interesting and diverse answers here. Everyone has a different comfort level when it comes to magazine capacity.

If you're going to plan/prepare on needing a pistol, best plan on the worst...
The XD-45, isn't a "perfect" choice for us here. Simply put, there are no pre ban mags available for them. That's the primary reason i chose a glock 19 over the XD and M&P weapons. I guess, If going somewhere local for a quick stop 9 rounds is fine + an 8 rnd mag albeit .45! But, if I were knowingly going somewhere undesirable or out of state, 15+1 and a 2nd 15 rnd mag would be more assuring, although scaled to 9mm...
If I could have the XD or XDM-45 comapct w/ 13+1, I would have one, and not the glock 19. Although, I would have eventually bought the G-19 to have a 9mm.

Amen to this.

If you actually ever need to use your carry, you had best be prepared for the worst, so 14+ (or 7+1 if you are old-fashioned), a spare mag, PLUS a back-up gun is the best plan.

Sucks about the preban stuff. I open carry, so I carry with a 13 rounder in the gun, and an extra 13 rounder in my pocket, both with the xtenstion things. I have two more 13 rounders loaded up for home defense, so that's 4 13 rounders, and then two ten rounders just in case, and a Mossberg 500 with 5 oo buck shells in the tube and 5 more on the stock. No BUG, though, but my dad does have an HK45c and a remington shotgun, so if our house ever gets broken into, I think we're ready. And I think I'm good with 26, or 23 ( 1 ten rounder inserted, 13 rounder in pocket) if concealed, .45 acp ranger T's while carrying.

I'd say if you carry anything that holds one round...your carrying much more than most the people out there. As with anything, the more you have, the better. But, 1 round is still 100 PERCENT better than ZERO.

Just to keep things in perspective.

Perfectly comfortable with my 1911s (7+1 or 8+1) or P7 (8+1) as primary carry, with a 442 (5) as secondary/BUG.

ETA - My CCW priorities:
- Reliable
- Chambered in a capable round with modern hollowpoint loadings readily available
- Handles well (combination of accuracy plus how my own skills transfer)
- Concealable & comfortable to conceal
- Large magazine capacity

So, unless something is entirely equal on all other grounds, I don't give any weight to mag capacity.

Personally I think mag capacity is far over rated for the average CCWer.  Presentation, gun handling, tactics and laying those first two rounds on target is far more important than how much the mags hold.  Not saying that those things don't matter, just that we place more importance in mag capacity.  I've seen guys that could recharge their hicap guns in a fraction of a second, but couldn't draw from concealment and put two shots on target in less than 5.

Also, level of concealment and carry is going to play a large role in capacity.  And I'm not going to diss the 1911 guys by saying you need 15 rounds either.  I've seen too many 1911 guys that can draw, place 2 shots each in 3 different targets in less than 3 seconds to want to fuck with them.  It's not my favorite choice of carry guns, but for those that love them and are willing to put up with them, they can run like a raped ape in the right hands.

Now that I've bored you all to fucking tears, for me personally I want a mag capacity of 9 rounds for a single stack full sized CCW piece, 7 for a compact or subcompact CCW piece and 15 for a doublestack full sized gun, which will probably be carried OWB.

Honestly I would have modified my numbers to the above if it wasn't for the fact that a USP9, and S&W MP 45 fit so well in my hand.
