Will .22LR shot shells cycle the action on my 22/45? Are there any issues with shooting them through this pistol?  Thanks.

No, they are not powerful enough to cycle the action.

They usually eject and feed okay cycling them by hand, like a straight pull "bolt action."

I've used them that way in semis a few times over the years, but prefer to use them in revolvers.

Nope, not enough juice to cycle the action.   They won't mess up your bore with occasional use.  You've got to be REAL CLOSE to use .22 snake shot effectively!

At 10 feet they are worthless.

I tried some 22 LR shot shells in my Taurus model 94 revolver.  I shot a couple of pop bottles filled with water and I was not impressed.  I did kill one snake with the shot shells but decided I did not want to trust my life with 22 shot shells on poisonous snakes.  A friend had some 38 shot shells and I loaded a few in 38 special which should be a lot more effective.  I carried 3 38 special shot shells and 3 150 grain lead SWC in my model 15 S&W when I'm concerned about snakes.

when I was about twelve years old and I was home alone I decided to take a pot shot at a squirrel who was ripping up my mothers bird feeder.

Feeder hung in a tree that was at least 60/70 feet from the house so I knew it was hopeless to expect a kill

I slid open the slider and snapped off a shot hoping the noise and the shot raining down on the tree would scare the bugger off .

Must have hit a artery with a lucky pellet because he hit the ground and started flopping around like a demon trout tossed up on a stream bank.

Couple of points to make here:

My mother had just ran down to the corner store and would be back in 4 or 5 minutes .

I wasn't supposed to be shooting any critters except rabbits and woodchucks in the garden and this was January .

After the tree rat finally conked out the 3" of fresh fallen snow looked like somebody had killed a cow with a huge circle of bright blood splashed
all around the side yard . I tossed the body down in the briar patch over the side yard and tried to kick around the snow but it didn't do much but make the bright red spots look like larger  pink spots.

I was in all sorts of trouble with mom who didn't believe the squirrel story . Guess she thought I had shot something big , I had to drag my ass through the briars to retrieve the squirrel to show her .

So yeah , 22 bird shot isn't worth much but don't count on that

Thanks for the replies. I thought it would more effective than what it is.

Yeah, you have to be pretty close to do any damage. At 10 yards, the shot may not even penetrate a Coke can.

Strange sounds coming from the basement.
Squirrel running wild. How the fucker got in I don't know.
Stupid me I figured since I had some CCI 22 shot shells I would solve the problem.
Bang and he jumps a foot in the air and climbs a book case.
Hand cycle the action.
Now I got him.
Bang and he jumps off the book case and runs to where the patio chair cushions  are stacked.
Got ya now ya fuck.
Bang and he leaps 2 feet in the air and vanishes.

From up stairs comes Grumpys voice "What the fuck are you doing"
Ever try to explain away basement squirrel hunting ?
Grumpy says "Why didn't you just open the basement door and let it out" Funny I didn't think of that.
So
The next day there are noises from the basement again.
The squirrel has come back to life.
This time I got smart.
I opened the door and out it went.

As a result I am not ever going to consider even for a moment using 22 shot shells again.
And the small ventilation holes in the patio chair cushions are not really too bad if you don't look for them.

i buy cheap (ie; $50) bolt action single shot .22 rifles and have them relined for .22 short, they are perfect for this job.

in the mean time use colibri rounds in your pistol, as they are the next best thing.

the bird shot isn't designed to to kill rodents, sometimes it will work.

edit to add - nothing is more deflating than your wife asking "what the fuck are you doing" we all know that tone she uses

I've finished off a couple of wounded pigeons with them.

Like HardShell said, not enough oomph to cycle a pistol.

If you are going to get some, get the ones with the crimped end, like Winchester.

The CCI ones seem anemic, comparatively, and they split cases a bunch.
