I am a newbie to this caliber, what is safe to shoot in a non ramped barrel, factory ammo wise?  I am not looking to shoot an open load.

Factory ammo you are good with any 38 Super.  You will see some marked 38 Super and some +P but all 38 Super is +P.  This is so it is not confused with 38 ACP, the Super's father and a defunct round from the early 1900's.  I've shot about every brand I can find including Double Tap

Non ramped barrels are GTG with the Super ammo. Including the hot Cor-Bon and Double Tap ammo (watch out for pierced primers though).

Buying factory Super isn't really a good way to spend your money...

All factory ammo is safe to shoot. Only one I would watch out for is Atlanta Arms and Ammo, P/N IN38S, this may be loaded to major PF.

I forgot about Georgia Arms .38 Super. But I believe they use the stronger Starline brass for their hot loads.
