I'm looking to get a .45 (I presently own 9mm, .357 mag and .22s)

I've narrowed it down to:

S&W 990L
Glock 30
Beretta Cougar 8045

I'd like any feedback on any of those that you might own.

By the way, I purposely left out Springfield.  I have 2 XD-9's and LOVE them.   However, I'm in NYS and limited to 10 round mags.  The XD45 has a longer grip to accommodate the 13 round magazines so I feel that the longer grip would be a total waste and therefore would like gun that is less tall instead of having a bunch of empty space in it.

The Glock 30 is very accurate and soft shooting for a midsized .45, easy to CCW also. Spare parts are avalible every where and Glock has a lifetime warranty.

kewl...thanks guys!  I appreciate it.  Is it true there is no light rail?  The picture on the Glock website shows it without one.  That's a shame, but wouldn't preclude me from purchasing one.

Out of your list the Glock.  I find those subcompacts to small for my hands.

The subcompact Glocks don't have light rails because the dust cover is too short.

If you want a .45 look at the different model Glocks and pick the one that fits best for you. If you have some money to spend, also look at H&K.

I know it's not on your list, but I've been really pleased wih my SA XD .45 ACP.
Damn accurate, nearly 1500 rounds through it with zero feed problems, and fits my hands better than the Glock.
Plus it's hard to beat the $499.95 price tag!

Can you kindly measure the dimensions (height from bottom of grip to top of slide) and post them here for me?  Thanks.

I love my G30. The newer ones (since summer of '05) have rails too. If you want something a little narrower, go with the G36

The only one of those I have shot and owned is the 8045 Couger which for me was a fantastic pistol. The only dumb thing about it to me was the 8rd capacity for a double stack but it was still worth it to me. Very low felt recoil.

Couger is a very nice feeling weapon. Much better feel to it than a super small Glock (IMO).

I think you should visit a store and try to hold all of them. Then pick the one that your hands seem to like.

Since your other choices are sort of compact, I'd like to suggest another.

How about a Sig 245?Great gun and very easy to hide.

The Cougar doesn't balance well for me. The Glock 30 is a wonderful gun (I owned one) but I couldn't get past the mushy trigger feel. A SW99 (which I own, older version) is a good gun but has a similiar feel of trigger, albeit slightly better.

I noticed you don't list any 1911 versions, so I won't suggest a Springfield.

Ditto for a H&K USP, of which I own two. Best .45acp out there, short of a Les Baer, IMO.

If you are looking for a CCW, then here you go, its got 10+1 capacity of .45acp goodness all on a compact 1911 platform.
Its a Para Ordinance Night Hawg.

Sorry for the late reply.
5" from the bottom of the clip to the top of the slide, 7" total lenght.
I carry concealed either in a Galco shoulder rig or concealed hip holster. It's practically almost the same size as my XD40  4", although by no means is it as small as my 3" XD 40 subcompact.
Depends on how small you're carry need is. If I need to be super discrete I carry just my XD40 subcompact.

what's the FPS on those ultra short barrels?

I would guess around 650 FPS

The GLOCK octagonal rifling produces higher velocities than traditionally rifled barrels of equal length.

ETA: From your list, either the G30 or the Cougar (8000/8040/8045).

Generally, speaking, a handgun round will lose about 50f/p/s per inch of barrel loss for each inch below 4-5". So you're 650f/p/s would be a little low, IMO.

It is for this reason I use only hardball in my 3" SA Micro 1911.

I am one of the local Glock Haters, but if you want to eliminate possible problems which can happen with most any auto pistol and the Customer Service and warranty B.S. I think the safest bet is a Glock.
I have owned 4 Glocks (still have 2), all 4 shot to POA and ran 100% right out of the box. I wish I could say the same for several of my other auto pistols.
