It be more powerful, higher pressure and may not be suitable in some older weapons or weapons of lesser quality. YMMV

IIRC, The 'P' stands for pressure. Indicating that the round is loaded to higher than standard pressures. This generally translates to more velocity for a given bullet weight than rounds loaded to standard pressure.

Opinions vary, but the tacked Ammo FAQ is a good start for this and many other questions

There are plenty of +P loyalists, and there are those that say +P is just more bang and flash, for a mildly faster bullet that may or may not be more effective
Personally I'm not a big +P guy, I recommend you do your own research and come to your own conclusion, as YMMV

There are maximum pressures set by SAAMI for various cartidges.  "+P" is like a bonus spec found normally on older loads (.45ACP, .38spcl, 9mm) that are normally about 10% higher pressure than the standard loading.  Increased recoil, flash and noise can be expected.  I like +P if available.  IMO, if it's available for defensive ammo I use it.

Google "SAAMI pressure" for an interesting look at the pressures of various loads.
