Hey all.  I went ahead a got the Pro II they had at my local shop.  Used but in good shape.  Only problem is I hear a bunch of people HATE the external extractor.  Someone had posted that you can send the slide to Kimber to get it switched.  Does anyone have an idea on the cost to do this.  Also what are the problems with the external extractor. (the search didn't turn up with anything)

I personally had no problems with the external extractors as long as i used reliable ammo. I have had problems with Remington UMC, Wolf, and all walks of wally-world ammo. other than that, it seems to run very reliable.

Well, you'll have to call Kimber about the cost of sending them the slide and all that.  I don't see how they could "convert" it to internal extractor, seems like you'd need a new slide......

The Kimber external extractor debate has raged for quite some time now.  I've personally seen and heard of folks having NO problems, and folks having the thing sail off of the slide during a range session.  Hard to say.  Lots of bad reports, lots of "no problem" reports.

Does seem to me that they never did get it right, because I think most new models coming out have gone back to internal.

Give Kimber a call.  Talk.  See what they say.  I'm sure if the gun won't run right, they'll make it right some way.

May just be a case of "go out and shoot the thing".....who knows, maybe 1,000 trouble-free rnds from now you'll be happy with it.........

Beautiful Kimber!

Good luck with that external extractor....
All I can say is I'm glad mine is internal.

Its my understanding that Kimber will switch out the slide if you ask at no cost to you.
But I could be wrong.

The new Tactical Pro I bought had repeated extraction problems. On the second trip back to the factory they replaced the slide with one that had a internal extractor. I didn't have to ask, they just did it. Haven't had a single failure to fuction since. It's now my off duty gun if that tells you anything about how I feel.

Nice.  Good to hear that.  I think Kimber has pretty much given up on the idea of an external extractor.

The fact that they'd even go the lengths to replace the whole slide, in order to give the gun an internal extractor. it's almost as if.......they're embarassed they even tried.

That's a fine looking blaster you have.  I would just shoot it and see how it works.  I have a Custom II with an external extractor that has been fine.  I figure if I start to have problems I'll send it in.  David

Nice handgun!

I would see how it works for you. Mine, a Stainless Gold Combat with the external extractor, has never had a mechanical failure of any kind. The external extractor has worked flawlessly.

I just wish I could get a replacement machined extractor rather than the factory MIM part. Having spares in hand "just in case" is always a good idea.

Wolff Gunsprings sells a extra power spring specifically for the external Kimber extractor.  I stumbled into the spring after months of hassle with my Kimber TLE/RL Pro.

I was ready to use my TLE/RL Pro as a trotline weight.

***Update***

Ok, I finally got to the range.  The first 2 mags (8 rds each) went through flawlessly.  I reloaded them and chambered a round.  Fired once, it was good. After the second shot... jam.  The shell was 1/2 pulled out of the chamber and the slide was already trying to feed a new round from the mag.

To fix the problem, I needed to pull the slide back and lock it (this was needed because the mag wouldn't drop).  Pull the attempted loaded round back into the mag with my fingernail, drop the mag, and pull out the spent shell.  This happened a total of 4 or 5 times with 2 of the mags I have.(I was told that this company is the one who makes Kimbers mags.) I put 30 rounds or so through with the "Kimber" mag and no problems.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?  Does it sound like a mag problem or an extractor problem?

Probably an extractor issue.  But it did work with the Kimber mag, correct?  Try just usin' it, and maybe a Wilson 47D.  These are the best, at least for my Kimber.

Use the GOOD mags, and if the problem doesn't repeat itself, you know it's the mags.  If it does this with good mags, it is an extractor issue.  If it's an extractor issue, might just be a weak extractor spring.

However, 30 rnds isn't a whole lot to determine "reliability".  I'd say put at least 100 rnds through the "good" mags.  Then you'll know.

Yeah, determining reliability can be costly in a semi-auto, ammo-wise.  One of the many resons I reload......

It's the extractor. Contact Kimber and they'll more than likely replace the slide with one that has an internal extractor.
