pictured below left to right, are:

2006 G17
2009 G22
2010 G17EXO (dec 2010, to be exact)

notice the lack of the halfcircle molded out of the magwell on the 2010 G17:

i wonder what was the purpose of this change?  asthetics or function?  both?

The cut out was somewhat necessary originally.  Not so much anymore.  I prefer to have it.

interesting, can you expand on that?

Original Glock mags did not drop free. The cut was there so you could pull the mags out. All new mags drop free.

Older mags would stick from swelling when loaded? New ones have a bit of a metal liner to prevent the bulge and drop free?

The cut out was designed when the only mags avaliable were non-drop free and aided in removing empty mags. All Glock mags are full metal lined drop free now. The earlier ones were only metal lined on 3 sides which allowed them to expand.

interesting, this must have only affected the full framed pistols?  my G23, which is from 2000 and my oldest glock, does not have this magwell cutout.

It affected all of them.
Early 23s had it too.

well, i was just making a speculation as to why my 2000 G23 did not have it, but my 2006 G17 and 2009 G22 does.

goes without saying, that the G23 you post is older than my G23.

GEN2 compacts have it.

I've heard fatties complaining about the mag removal cuts being uncomfortable for their sausages.
