I was thumbing through a magazine and they had some bushing style comps for 80 dollars.  Now my question is how do they work because they can't be a tight fit around the bullet as it leaves the end of the barell right?  Does anyone have one and does it actually do anything? They seem like they would be pretty neat if they would work.  Thanks

If you're shooting 45ACP it's not really going to make a difference. Comps from what I understand work best with high pressure rounds. 45ACP is pretty low pressure.

Yes, all of the above. Most race gun owners will tell you that .38 Super is the best caliber for using a comp & all other calibers don't make the velocity to benefit from them. .357Sig may be an exception, perhaps?

Instead of fooling around with gadgets, apply that same $$$ towards an aftermarket, fitted barrel. A brand such as Kart, Wilson, Bar-Sto, Nowlin, etc. will all allow one to gain extrodinary accuracy from a good 1911. A good quality gunsmith is worth his weight in gold for a properly fitted barrel.

As already stated, a comp...pretty much any comp, is of limited benefit with a .45 unless you do some seriously special reloads for maybe steel use...say 155gr at ultra high velocity, etc. And the bushing 'comp' is a joke...they are worthless. Don't waste your money.

ETA the real benefit of a comp on a .45 shooting heavy ball equivalent loads is the added weight, not the redirection of gas, although you can tell a little difference with some.

Bushing comps can't efficiently use what little gas presure is avialable. Whats worse is you are adding mass/weight to the slide. Most likely increasing your percieved recoil. I think the suggestion you recieved encouraging you to use the money for a better barrel/bushing set up will make you considerably happier.
