So are the stainless ones worth trying?

Chad, what problems did you have with the old "black" ones, and what have you changed?

There were a couple issues with the black .45's, the coating for one created a lot of friction with the follower and the body. We have changed the coating. Another this is we changed the spring/follower to allow the 8th round in easier. There are a couple more slight design changes we made as well but the bottom line is this, no matter what I say on here about the mags being improved the proof is in the pudding so to speak, and I hope when everyone on here gets the samples they will see the changes first hand and report back.

Thanks to everyone that volunteered to help test, I apologize to anyone that I could not send samples to this time, but I will remember you guys the next time I am looking for some testers.

I received two mags in the mail today. They look great, fit in my CDP, lock the slide back and drop free as they should.

I'll get a report out as soon as I can- it won't be this weekend, but soon enough. I'm always happy to go shoot, and this story has been an intriguing one. If everything goes as it should, C Products will have a new customer in me, and possibly an additional one in my friend.

Thanks, Chad!

I bought one from AIM to try out the other day. Haven't tried it yet, but I must say that my initial impressions on it are not good. It was still in the wrapper but the mag looked like it had been well used with tons of scratches up and down the length of it. I am not a seasoned 1911 shooter, but it looked worse in brand new condition than any of my used 1911 mags do. That said, we'll see if it works before I really start to bitch.

Judging it by scratches?? Seriously?

Like I said, I won't bitch until I see if it works or not.

That said, the scratches may be nothing, but when I buy something BRAND NEW I expect it to look the part. I don't think I have ever bought something labeled as brand new that was this rough looking though. Obviously this is being labeled as "new" when in fact it is anything but. May not be a big deal, but it doesn't exactly speak well for CProducts IMO. Who knows, maybe it was AIM's fault, but it was still sealed in a package when I got it so I am guessing it is not AIM. Could be wrong though.

Edited to add picture:

Slightly used Wilson Combat mag on the left, brand new CProducts mag on the right. It actually looks worse in real life and has a ton of scratches on the other side as well. I plan on using it and testing it out in comparison to some other mags. Results will be posted on my blog eventually.

If it works well, I will probably buy more, despite the scratches on it, as the price is right.

It looks like my new CMC magazines, meaning it looks fine.

Yeah, that's fine, I know it shouldn't affect function, it will either work or won't. However, it just looks used is all I am saying and leaves me with a bad first impression. I know mags get scratched up like that, it's just that I want to be the one who scratches them up.

I would rather have a mag with a few tooling marks that works good, than a shiny one that doesn't work.I have some snap on,and matco wrenches that are nice, and shiny that have broke, and craftsman in the same size that have never broke.

The scratches you see are from us inserting the magazine into a mag well to make sure it fits properly. We mag well test every magazine before it leaves here. Now that being said, if it has too many scratches it should have not been sent. I apologize for that, I am more than willing to exchange the magazine if you would like. Just IM me.

Chad, you seem to be willing to please...a lot can be said  about that.........I sent an email to another MFG'ER two weeks ago with no response as of yet...........I have a Wilson ETM magazine that won't work in two of my pistols...........so I realize that not everybody gets it right the first time.................

Hi Chad , have bought many ar mags from you guys but have not read all three pages yet. Do you have or have plans for 38 Super mags for a Gov. model colt. Would love to have about 10 more if they are made and work well.

I appreciate the offer. That means a lot, however, as I stated earlier, if the mag works, that is all I really want. So, we'll see how that goes and I will let you know based on that how I truly feel.

Let me ask this again, just in case C Products missed it the first time:

CPRODUCTS REP, Do these mags have GI Tapered, Colt Hybrid, or Wadcutter Parallel feedlips?

If you have no clue what any of these feedlip styles or their applications are, or what type your mags have, then that is probably a clue as to why they are being reported as mediocre.

Chad had offered to send me more T&E mags, as my first black one had to be pried out of my gun.
So here are my first impressions of the C-Products 1911 mags, round 2.
Chad sent me 1 stainless one and 2 black ones.

So I loaded them up with some Hornady 230gn FMJs.

When loading, the Stainless one, loaded fine, just like my Chip McCormicks and Wilsons do.

The black ones however, had a tendency to bind up in the top part of the mag, as more rounds were added they smoothed out a but.
Inserted the mags, one at a time, and hand cycled all the rounds through, through 4 different 1911s.

This worked fine, but one thing I noticed was that the black mags, when loaded could not be seated in the gun with the slide in battery. Only when hit with the palm of my hand would they lock.

I was unable to push them in.

But once in, they fed the hand cycled rounds fine, but they had one thing in common: Neither mags would lock the slide back in any of the 4 guns I tried.

Intersting enough, I grabbed the original Stainless C-Products mag, and it locked the slides back just about every time. Did C-Products use weaker springs in round 2? I don't know.

All of them did drop free, from all the guns I used.
It didn't even look like the slidestop was making an effort to go up and lock the slide.

(No real upward movement to speak off.)

(Nice positive lock with McCormick mag, for comparison)

The guns I tried them in:

TRP Operator;

Full Rail Operator;

PT1911;

Kimber Raptor 4"
Now, this was just a first (second) look at these mags, so far a vast improved over the last black one, as I didn't need a screwdriver to remove it from my guns, but not impressive by any means.
Did not make it to the range yet, but once I do, more reviews will follow.

***Update on my Review***
Got an IM from Chad a few days after I posted the above 2nd review:
Dan, I appreciate your review. I think you might have gotten a magazine
with the wrong spring, which would explain the problem with holding the
bolt back. I am going to overnight you a few today, please let me know
when you get a chance how these perform.
Thanks,
Chad
And

We made some changes to the spring to allow the 8th round to seat
easier, and we have had to make a few changes to the spring. If the
magazines you got do not hold the bolt back I am quite certain you got
the wrong spring. I am very sorry, the ones you get tomorrow should be
good to go.
Chad

So before I even take these mags to the range, I'll be receiving a third set of T&E mags today. Hopefully I'll have a review this evening.

I also recieved 2 mags from C products to  T&E. Sorry no pics, but here is what I noticed. My only 1911 is a rock island and I have Chip Mccormick and Novak mags for it and they work just fine no issues. The C products stainless loads fine but needs a little effort to seat in the mag well. hand cycled 230 gr. ball ammo, everything ejected and slide locked back. only complaint is very hard to release slide with mag in loaded or unloaded. Mag drops free no other issues. The black mag was a little hard to load 8 rds. but I got them in. Loaded and unloaded a few times and it excepts all 8 now. This mag is very difficult to put in mag well and get a positive lock but it will go. With 7 rds. works just fine. Hand cycled all 8 rds. they all loaded and ejected. Slide will not lock on empty mag. I cannot get it to lock unless I do it manually. When I lock the slide back by hand and release there is no effort to release it like with the stainless. I'll be going to the range this weekend and will report back with how they function when fired.

It's up to you, but I'd suggest posting a list of those to whom you sent mags for T&E, with a request of those members to acknowledge that they received them.

I received mine yesterday.
I loaded the stainless magazine with no problems.
The black magazine locked up after 2 rounds being loaded.

Neither mag would lock the slide back when empty.
Both mags needed to be smacked to lock into the pistol with 8 rounds loaded. With 7 rounds they locked in fine.

I will post a range report later.

I spoke too soon, they were waiting for me when I got home.

I didn't take any pics initially to give a visual of the finish, un-molested Thought about it after I had already been dinking with them for 10 minutes). I went straight to seeing how they lock in (loaded and unloaded), lock the slide back, drop free, load, and hand-cycled unload. Live fire to be conducted tomorrow.

These are the pistols used so far:

Top- Springfield GI circa 2003

Middle- Springfield GI circa 2009 (only a month out of the box)

Bottom- my carry iron:Springfield Loaded from the late 90's

Construction:

Both look well built. The base plates look to be a form of glass-filled nylon instead of the normal plastic. They also look to be secured to a steel baseplate.

I now know what the one guy was talking about when he said something about the scratches. They don't bother me, nor would I be bothered by them if I bought them, but they are definitely not your average scratch from a standard magwell. You guys need to take a file to the magwell you use as these scratches are deep enough to catch a fingernail. Of all the mags I have, and of all the wear they have on them, the scratches are on the surface. There's one heck of a bur on your test fitting magwell. The Stainless is worse in this regard as the black finish filled in the scratches a decent amount.

After being in and out of 3 different magwells 2 or 3 dozen times, the Stainless shows the telltale signs of normal contact (hazy spots). The black shows the same, but in the form of the finish thinning.

Empty:

Mags inserted and locked in as you would expect. Stainless was slightly smoother, while the Black wasn't too far behind.

Stainless and Blackened locked the slide back reliably during all empty practice.

Both mags also dropped free from all 3 pistols. BUT, they didn't jump out with any vigor. Holding pistols with mags parallel to the ground would only result in them popping out roughly 1/8". CMC's, by contrast will jump out over an inch.

Loaded (hand cycled):

Stainless took rounds smoothly and up to the capacity without any bleeding fingers needed to get the 8th round in.

Black was "notchier". I figured out that the wider portion of the feed lips were still rather narrow and they were snapping past them to load. Once I started loading them further forward, then pushing them fully to the rear, it also loaded to capacity, albeit with a little more resistance needed to get the 8th round in compared to the Stainless.

With the slide forward and 8rds in the mag, the Stainless locked into the 2 GI's without much more than a push. Needed a whack on the bottom for the Loaded, but it still wasn't overly hard. 7rds went fine.

Black needed a whack on every one with 8rds loaded up. The 2 GI's were equally stiff, with the Loaded being slightly harder. 7rds was fine.

Stainless functioned 100% (when I didn't lose my grip on the slide and short stroke it
) on all 3 pistols and locked the slide back every time.

Black also fed perfectly, but failed to lock the slide back on the Loaded. I reloaded it and it barely caught the slide the second time around.

Will update with a live fire test tomorrow after work. Should be able to get 100rds through both if my thumbs hold out.

Alright gang I arrived home yesterday to find my magazines from Chad in the mailbox. I received one stainless and one black. They both arrived well and had a no overt or obvious physical issues. I loaded up the range bag with my colt and 150 rounds of ammo and set out for the range.

Pistol used
Colt Government model 80 series and has proven to be extremely reliable
Magazines
C-products stainless
C-products black
Colt factory stainless

Loaded and fired two sets of Colt factory magazines with no issues.

Loaded and fired 8 rounds C-products "black: magazine and noticed immediately that the black follower was extremely difficult to depress and had a tendency to hang up when loading.  First magazine fed five rounds flawless and then I experienced a FTF on the 6th round. Cleared gun and finished last two rounds. The slide did not lock back on last shot

Loaded and fired 8 rounds C-products "black" magazine and again experienced a FTF on round 5 this time. Cleared and finished magazine once again slide did not lock open on last round.

Loaded C-products "stainless" magazine and noticed immediately that follower moved more freely in magazine body. Loaded mag into pistol and emptied all 8 shots with no issues other than failure of slide to remain open on last round. Loaded another 8 rounds into stainless magazine and once again it cycled through all 8 rounds but once slide failed to lock back on last shot.

I spent the rest of the session switching back and forth between the stainless C-products mag and the black C-products mag and it is clear there are issues with the black and it appears to be centric to the follower and more than likely the black coating being used on magazine? I experienced multiple FTF issues and in my experience it was isolated to the "black" magazine.
The stainless magazine loads rounds well-loads into pistol tight  and seems to function very well except for the fact that the slide would not lock on last shot. A problem I have never experienced with that Colt using factory magazines or Wilsons.

Upon my return back home I inspected all the magazines and noticed that the C-products magazines had an unusual "contact" mark located in the upper right hand portion of magazine on the backside of mag.

My overall impressions are that the stainless version can be a very good magazine if the failure to lock slide issue is resolved. The black version has issues and they are primarily due to the follower hanging up as I experienced multiple FTF.  I hope that the folks at C-products are listening and I want to thank them for allowing me the opportunity try these and to be fair I will continue to use them and see if there are any differences with long term usage.

One final note: Ammo used 150 rounds

Hey guys. I received my magazines.  I have yet to test them as we have had multiple inches of rain on a daily basis lately but I didn't want chad to take heat for not sending mags out when he did.  I will repost once I get a chance to shoot them.  My initial feedback is that everything looks fine.  I will echo that  the follower in the black mag seems to stick a little but I have done anything but depress it with a pen so hopefully this will go a little better with ammo.

Chad,

If you are looking for any more input in regards to how your mags function in an RIA GI or an older lama mini max. I will gladly turn some money into noise for a good cause.

I have 2 black mags,  no FTF with either, but neither will drop free from my colt commander.

I have recived my 2 T/E mags in today. (one Stainless and one blued)
I had a few spare minutes to go test out the mags at the range so here is the report.
Both mags were tested with 50rds a piece. The gun used was my Springfield Loaded. (that is not mag sensitive, well used and looser tolerances)
First the blued mag only had one failure to feed over the entire 50rds, the slide did lock back constantly. (the failure to feed seemed as if the follower hit a tight spot or a binding point, but as it gets used or broken in it seems to be a self curing problem)
Secondly the Stainless mag no failures of any kind worked perfectly in all ways. The stainless mag seemed to be smoother and generally much higher quallity than its $13.95 price at AIM would make you think.
I know it was not the most extensive test with only 100rds on tap, but these mags both work fine in my go to 1911. (not a target or match gun but a darn good 1911) I used this pistol because it is what I use most often in the real world form CCW  to a sidearm for hunting.
I will be buying the stainless mags and that is a vote with my wallet.
Thank you for the T/E mags Chad you seem to have a winner.

We do not want this to turn into a begging for a free mag post. Take it to IM.

Any possibility of pics and a more detailed evaluation?

Got 2 mags in the mail the other day, one black and one stainless.  Soon as I get a  day off of work I'll write up an evaluation for you guys.
