| own lots of guns but no 1911's. finally going to buy my first one(like AK-47's not my only one because i know that a joke.] I want an inexepensive one. all my research leads to three guns. Springfield mil-spec, taurus pt-1911, RIA tactital. all opinions will be great.even bad ones. |
|
I have a Springfield GI and a RIA GI. Both are good guns IMHO. Of those you listed I would go with the RIA Tactical. Being a left handed it has alot a features I like and would need to add to the SA Milspec. I have never been a fan of Taurus. Seen too many Taurus guns go back to the factory for their lifetime warranty. |

As for RI - I carry a 1911. I have a 1991 Compact - Colt - I have a Kimber Team Match II I bought a RI for fun - 5" barrel - full size $330 OTD. As for shooting -the RI It Shoots better than my 1991 Compact It is NOT as good as my Kimber - but the KIMBER is SWEEEEEEEEET. For having GI sights it is a great shooting gun. The only limitations I have on it are the sights. The GIs are not great - but THE SHOOTER MAKES THE GUN BETTER even with its sight. The gun is as close to mil spec as you could ask for ----------- It looks and feels and cycles and fires GREAT. In other words - If you are a good to decent shot - YOU WILL LIKE THE GUN and be even happier for only spending $330. |
Why? I personally have a RIA. Do you? The reason I ask is that MOST (but not all) who have one seem to like it. It's not a Kimber or Wilson...but it isn't 1/2 the quality...but it IS 1/2 the price. Mine is accurate enough at realistic distances, fit and finish are good, and it does not rattle like a box of parts either. Just my opinion, mind you. ka |
The Kiev 88 medium format camera crowd says, "Half the quality at a tenth the price!" With the Springfield GI guns getting more and more expensive, the Rock Island GI guns are as cheap as you can go and still expect to have a gun that will probably work. Most places are selling the Rock Island GI guns for $350 or less. But also consider the Rock Island Tactical. For another $40-$50, you get better sights, a beavertail and an ambi safety. Another gun to consider is the STI Spartan. It's made from a Rock Island frame, slide and barrel and STI trigger components. Mine is beautiful. It's tight, accurate and reliable. And it's backed by one of the best companies in the 1911 business. Price on the Spartan is $571.00 from most places. Good Spartan info! |
That would be BEST, but good luck finding one. I'd definitely go for the Taurus. I haven't heard a bad thing about them. Either way you're getting a Brazilian 1911, it just seems that the Taurus 1911s are more consistant than the Springies. |
I remember when I got mine NEW for $267. It was about when the background crap just started and so I had to wait a few days for a green light. I told the FFL not to say anything specific on my Answering machine cuz My Girlfriend would know I bought another gun. So he leaves this message... "It's in... you're clear... you can come down any time." or some such nonsense... Real smooth, Snappy! Of course she got the message and decoded it in short order.

Come again? i know that Taurus is Brazillian and NORINCO is Chinese(made on colt machinery). Are you saying that Springfield 1911's are made in Brazil? |
|
Found one on GUNBROKER. $470 is the minimum bid NORINCO for sale |
yea...at least the frames mostly nowadays are-both my SA 1911s were marked "Imbel, Brazil" i'd choose the SA mil-spec, norinco, taurus and RI in that order |
| RIA,buoght mine for 160 from a transfering GI.50 rnds thru the pipe, flawless finish.i always wanted a 1911 but the prices always kinda set me back, this was a deal from the gun gods.i am more than impressed with the accuracy and cycling.it does however need a beaver tail safety and combat hammer, that is all i will ever do to this gun. |
Wow! How do you sleep at night? |
I guess that's better than, "This is the Dr's office. Your test results came back positive. Stop in and see me and we'll take care of you." |
