When you say porting do you mean ports in the barrel and slide?

Or are you talking about lighten cuts in the slide?

The thing is while lighten cuts look badass you really need to play with the spring weights to get the gun running 100%

I woulgd buy one of the aftermarket slides if i was going that route. Something like zev works.

No it does not have to but the new metal exposed will oxidize since it is not surface treated.

Truth.  You're starting to roll the dice with reliability and durability when you change the slide weight and spring tension.  That being said, if you do go the lightening cut route, you will definitely want the slide refinished.  And keep in mind that factory black finishes like melonite are a lot tougher than cerakote.

Why when someone wants to do something custom can people not answer the question but have to tell the OP what he is doing may have reliability issues and how one finish is so much tougher.  Come on ...... How many of you are digging your slide into the ground and racking the slide like Chris Costa or burying your pistol at the beach while you go swimming just to say you did the corrosion and sand torture test?

Do not sweat the reliability is going down crowd.  The Glock is SUPER easy to tinker or modify the spring system to get a pistol that is reliable you may not even have too change anything possibly.  Lots of people have done custom work ZEV Tech does machine work like this and complete custom make overs and many other good shops do too.

I have thousands of rounds through my lightened 17L and 19 and neither have reliability issues. Both use original guide rod assemblies.
