What is the preffered material used to fill in the backstrap on glocks before it is reshaped?  Preferably it is black in color so that it will blend in with the frame color.  I am planning on reshaping to more of a 1911 angle as this is what I am used to ( kimber, usp)  I am going to go with a slight rough finish as opposed to stippling, just rough enough finish so that skateboard tape adheres well.  Pretty much have all the materials, except filler material.  I have some pro-bed 2000 that is black, it dries to a light black color, but it is so thick that I beleive it would be hard to make sure all the air bubbles are out.  Like a asked what is the best?  Thanks in advance.

I used acra-glass from brownells with some aluminum oxide powder for strength. Worked excellent. Please note that you want to wear a dust mask when using the aluminum oxide powder.

I used my 1911 as the grip shape template, and it is excellent on my G20.

I finished up one of my glocks with Herculiner bed liner paint for an excellent grip surface. Applied it with a sponge and just dabbed it on the surface.
I have also painted some of my reshapped glocks with dura-coat, and that seems to give them a nice surface for grip too.

If you go to the tech corner on brownells web site, the have a very good write-up, complete with pictures, of the process.

Good luck.

ETA: I used playdough to fill in the areas to keep the acra-glass (or any filler material) from getting into in the backstrap channel.

Forgot about acraglass, it can be dyed black.  What color is marine text?  Not wanting to send gun out to be duracoated, prefer nice black finish of filler marerial.  For some reason I can not download or open the file from brownells.

Marine Tex is a very dark grey.  I would use black dye mixed in to get a match with the Glock polymer.

Thanks guys, I was finally able to open the brownells link and it had some good info on topic.  I will probably go with acraglas gel as this sounds easiest and seems to wrk for most.  Tonight I did round off the bottom of the trigger guard where it would bite my middle finger, super easy and looks real good.  Need to go ahead and order som stuff from brownells monday.

I did mine with JB stick weld under a coating of Marine-Tex gray. The JB stuff is much easier to work with than acraglas IMO. It sets up quickly and is very easy to mold into the shape of the grip you desire, I cut the hump off of the back of the grip with a hacksaw and just filled in the remaining area with the JB. Of course there are other name brands of the same stuff available, it is a steel reinforced epoxy compound that comes in a stick form and smells terrible. I would recomend getting some practice with the materials before cutting on an expensive pistol,FWIW.

The results are extremely close to what a popular refinishing company did on a G21 that I used to have, they charge about $200 for this.
