The best and most economical approach is rust bluing.
It doesn't require the nasty tanks of dangerous hot lye. It won't produce the shiny blue finish that most people think of where handguns are concerned, but it does make a nice matte finish. It is labor intensive, however. |

this stuff works great. I restored an old ruger I found under a truck seat. It came out very nice. This is what it looked like when I bought it.  After. Its a bad pic but all I have right now  |
