My friend just got a model 37-1 from his grandfather.  He's not sure how old it is.  It doesn't have the pinned barrel.  The serial # is bbn86xx

Can someone tell me when it was built and if +p is ok.

IIRC, S&W has said that if it has a model number, it's fine to use +p. I don't have my book handy, so no info on date.

No, not just a model #, it has to be a dash model #! 37-1 should be okay with +P ammo for once in a while shooting. I certainly wouldn't do more than 10-15rds a month (if that) with +P ammo.

S&W Reference Book says 37-1 was introduced in 1988 with the new yoke retention system & the 37-2 came out in 1990 with a new sight width from 1/8 to 1/10.

Hope this helps!
