Llamas aren't known for their quality and Rock Island's tend to be at the bottom of the 1911 barrel. I'd save your money for a GI Springfield. The money wouldn't be much more and you'd get a quality pistol with an excellent warranty.

YMMV

Llama and Quality don't belong in the same sentence

Save your money, buy a Springfield GI or a used Colt.

You'll be happier in the long run.

Are you looking for a 1st .45?

Do you like to tinker, and do you have the Kuhnhausen manuals?

If not then this wouldn't be a good choice.

I picked one up in a trade and didn't expect a out of the box runner.

I tuned and dremeled on the one I have and it runs well, now.

If it's all you can afford and it's the only one you can get, then get it.

Otherwise, save for a better one.

Had one years ago. It took both index fingers to pull the trigger.

Hold off and save up some more coin

I have one of the MAXI 45's  wont shoot hollow points reliably but functions flawlessly with hardball. I shoot it often for practice and fun but would not recommend for primary carry or protection weapon.

Yes this would be my 1st 1911. Ive been avid with plastics but decided its time to expand my horizion.

I cant really afford to shell out 500 but it would seem from what im hearing from you guys that my 300 would be wasted if i  did by the llama

I also have a Max-I .45.  I've never had a failure with hard ball ammo, but I also have trouble with HPs.  I'm using the inexpensive 8 round chip mccormick "shooting star" magazines in this gun.

the forum at www.m1911.org has a section dedicated to the Llamas with a lot of good information.

a lama is not a 1911.
it does not use the same parts so you can't swap say the trigger or hammer.
to top it off it's a piece of junk.

go rock island.  you get 100% ISGI swappable parts so you can upgrade later if you want to.
i have a buddy that got one he sent to a gun smith and for about 200 he had it running like a $1K gun.

Save a little more money and get a Springfield GI model, or maybe the mil spec model. You definitely will be better off in the long run. My first 1911 was a AMT Hardballer I bought new in 1989.  It's not that it was that bad of a gun, but it was definitely a jam-o-matic until I put some better springs & followers in my mags. The sights and trigger suck though.
