my springfield GI 4 inch is a great shooter, however, recently, when I put in a full mag and let the slide go forward, the top bullet in the magazine gets stuck on the feed ramp and doesn't chamber.  When I tap check on the bottom of the grip, it seats the magazine up enough to chamber the round.  it does this with hollow points and ball ammo.  this is my first 1911, is this normal?

it does this with both the standard 7 round mags and my 2 chip mcormick power mags

eta-for the purists, no I do let the slide rack forward on an empty chamber

have you changed the bullet desing you use???...some of the more blunt nosed ammo may have issues with your feed ramp...if it worked before and it isn't the mags or lube...look here...hopefully more will pipe in soon...

i've used hornady hollow points, remington hd hp, and pmc ball

i haven't changed the recoil spring, but i've only put maybe 200 rounds through it

This is issue could be a number of different issues.

First are you riding the slide forward?  When you pull the slide back do you release and let it go forward on its own force or do you hold on to it and slow it down like you do with an empty chamber?
Could have and extractor that is not tensioned correctly or not radius-ed correctly.
Have you tried a higher end mag like Wilson Compact ETM's/47D's or Tripp Research
Heavier recoil spring might remedy this but I am not putting much faith in that.
Do you have a recoil buffer in the pistol?

i let it slide forward on its own

I was told the Chip Mcormick mags WERE high end, or at least the price was (10 rounder)

Do you have a recoil buffer in the pistol?

i don't think so, the only thing I have changed on the gun is the grips

take the mag catch out and take a look at the magazine retaining teeth. It may have developed a small step aft of the actual notch, that gives you the impression of a seated magazine while it's really not.

This for your "if i tap the mag it all goes fine".

Its doing this with all your mags ?? So, that's ruled out. So excluding the recoil spring what could have changed in your 1911 ?

btw: CMCs are always on sale. Top line magazines are rarely on sale. The what could have changed is a test question.

He tried the 7 round mags with it and 10 round CMC.  I am still thinking the extractor is not tension right or the magazine.

We did rule out the riding the slide forward.

Sometimes Midway will knock a few bucks off Wilson mags.

Soo, if all of the magazines have been tried, what's that leave ?
You ruled out riding the slide forward.
Sometimes, and a few bucks.... hhmmm. That's not on sale every week is it ? Whens the last time you saw Tripp's on sale ? Let me know when they have a sale please !
There's nothing wrong with SA mags, btw.
Think about the history on this board with SA extractors.
Let me know if you need more hnts.

I would get some Wilson or Tripp mags and keep shooting it. use grease on the rails so it stays lubed up.

Ok, I've been called a lot of things and a Negative Nancy is probably one of the nicest. Thank You Edge for being so Polite. Soo. Lets dissect the OP

1) my springfield GI 4 inch is a great shooter. Ok, this seems to alleviate any geometry or ammunition problems.

2)  however, recently . Something has changed quickly.

3)  when I put in a full mag and let the slide go forward, the top bullet in the magazine gets stuck on the feed ramp and doesn't chamber.  When I tap check on the bottom of the grip, it seats the magazine up enough to chamber the round.  This speaks to the short distance of travel between the first round in a loaded magazine and the lack of inertia because of the short travel between that round and extractor claw. With a tap on the bottom of a magazine the inertia from that tap and a compressed spring is enough to get round past extractor claw.

4)  it does this with hollow points and ball ammo. Speaks for itself, not an ammunition related problem.

5)  this is my first 1911, is this normal? I can remember being new to the platform and nothing is more aggravating than inconsistent answers that took me in circles and led me to waste money on things for my 1911 that were not needed.

6) it does this with both the standard 7 round mags and my 2 chip mcormick power mags. I think every one knows what I think of CMC magazine followers by now. But the problem isn't magazine related. The problem exists with all the magazines irregardless of manufacture.

Negative Nancy ? OK.

Sorry had to... Plus just getting angry and getting into a fight throwing different cut downs at each other would have just been pointless.  I have no need to get angry and make you angry in the process by me reacting and saying some really rude.  So I said something to make you laugh and be a little stumped but I am defiantly with you on the CMC mags.

Trying higher end mags is going to be the most cost effective thing to try at this point short of you taking the pistol to a gun smith and get charged to go over it.

Ifin I was Ardvark I'd call Springfield and have them install a barstock extractor and leave the magazines alone.

It is super easy to pull out your magazine release and inspect it for wear/breakage.

Then send it in for a free ramp job and maybe a new mag release.

Springfield customer service is very good.

Have you cleaned and oiled the gun since you bought it? Pistols don't just keep running without care. They usually start getting gummy around 150 rounds. Also slap the loaded mag in a little harder - you may not be getting all of the mag catch.
